While working in OHSU's Department of Medical Psychology, I specialized in the assessment and treatment of Learning Disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorders, TBI, Autism Spectrum Disorders and related medical conditions.
I have been a licensed Clinical Psychologist in Oregon for over 25 years. The origins of my orientation to psychotherapy lie in the Client Centered work of Carl Rogers where empathy, unconditional positive regard, genuineness and acceptance guide the therapeutic pathway toward personal growth. Along the way I've studied Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), all of which inform my clinical approach to treatment, and are especially useful in the treatment of anxiety and mood disorders, e.g. Social Anxiety and OCD.

As a therapist, my goal is to provide a safe, compassionate, open, and honest environment for individuals seeking help and support. My fundamental belief is that every person possesses inner strength that helps them maneuver through their life. Sometimes, it can be difficult to recognize such strength and potential due to trauma, grief, isolation, neurodivergence, disability, and/or myriads of other barriers. However, healing occurs when one can name and tame these barriers, thus, reclaiming one's inner strength and honoring their worth. My hope is that I can help guide you toward unlocking your potential and finding your joy.

Curious about EMDR Therapy? EMDR is extensively researched, highly effective, and recommended by organizations such as the APA, WHO, and DoD. In fact, over the last 33 years, millions have been successfully treated with EMDR by over 100,000 clinicians worldwide. EMDR is commonly effective with anxiety, relationship struggles, grief, depression, fears, phobias, panic, trauma, sleep issues, addictions, and performance challenges. What makes EMDR so powerful is how effectively it turns on the brain’s natural healing process, allowing for deep release of the painful past thoughts and wounds that keep you stuck in old, negative patterns.

Do you feel as though you are your own worst enemy? When in the midst of a problem or stressful situation, does it seem like you make matters worse by being self-critical or saying self-defeating things to yourself? When we are going through something painful or difficult to accept, our internal dialogue sometimes becomes judgmental and self-critical, causing us to feel overwhelmed and doubt our ability to manage things on our own. Often we do not notice how the relationship we have with ourselves affects our ability to cope, solve problems, and live the life we want.

I work with children who are struggling with big feelings and big behaviors. Maybe your child has experienced a loss, a change in family structure, or experiences neurodivergence... or maybe you're not sure what is at the root of your child's struggles. Together, we will work closely to understand the needs that lie beneath your child's behavior. As an adoptee and an adoptive parent, I am deeply familiar with foster care and adoption trauma and I am honored to support families navigating the complexity of adoption.

If your aims include greater insight and agency, while immersed in a new relationship experience that highlights patterns you may be unaware of, then a psychodynamic relational therapy may be ideal for you. You experience symptom relief as the process of treatment deepens: anxiety and depression, interpersonal conflict, these transform, opening new possibilities for your life. We highlight your sense of self and how your self-expression manifests, while illuminating the relational cycles you repeat with yourself, others, and through habits, as you develop a new capacity to understand and influence these aspects of your life.

Are you ready to step into a healing journey? Are you feeling stuck in repeated experiences? Would you like to explore a new lens through which to see yourself and the world? I operate from a trauma-informed perspective that encourages you to hold yourself with compassion for the things you have gone through and to find a path to living a good life again. I only work with adults, and find that therapy progresses best when we both approach it with vulnerability and transparency.

For most people, strong relationships are an important indicator of health and well-being. When we feel stuck in old patterns that no longer serve us, our connection to others suffers too, which can turn up as depression, anxiety, or simply feeling alone and disconnected. By reconnecting with our essential gifts and strengths through the therapy process, we in turn can offer more to family, friends, and community.

I have worked in private practice as a clinical psychologist for over thirty years. Most of my clients find my “explore-in-this-moment” approach refreshing and transformational. By distinguishing old defenses from new experience and encouraging clients to explore either side of this fork separately, personal development naturally unfolds. The tendency to resist change is normalized and also explored. My approach offers clients the opportunity to step beyond the world they know to explore at the edge of the unknown which is the source of all change.

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?
You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.
How does treatment for ADHD work?
Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.
Are there specific medications for ADHD?
Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.
How long does treatment for ADHD take?
It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
