We all become (at some point) shackled to a stuck version of ourselves. Being vulnerable enough to choose something other than our perfectly practiced persona can seem ~impossible. Is your ~asker too broken to learn another way? It takes courage to recreate, redefine, and let go of what doesn't work! "I Don't Know," become very important words when we choose to sail the rough seas...and yet, the risk can be so beautiful. It becomes excruciatingly clear that the pain of staying where we are, must become more acute than leaping into something wonderfully new!

Are you coming for help with adjusting to a life transition, healing trauma, grieving a loss, coping with a diagnosis, or not quite getting to what your life is all about? Our work begins with my deeply listening to what brings you into therapy. Deep listening can be so healing in itself. I am strength-based, collaborative and practical.

—I have some limited availability at this time.— At different times in our lives, we may find ourselves challenged or feeling overwhelmed by life's demands, our relationships, careers, our health, or life transitions. It is during these challenges, that a trusting relationship with a counselor can give the dynamic support, to sort through our thinking, feeling, and patterns of behavior. Through this mindful work we may begin to see ourselves and our options in a new way. This offers the opportunity to grow and regain balance in our lives creating new strategies for a balanced life and conscious relationships.

My goal is to provide a place for you to talk about concerns whether they are day to day life stressors or serious mental health issues that are getting in the way of you living your best life. I believe sometimes we need a non-judgmental objective view to help us find ways to take the next step in our lives. I work with individuals who are struggling with stress, life transitions, interpersonal relationships, self-exploration, self-compassion, anxiety, and ADHD.

Therapy is an opportunity for one to learn new skills, manage specific struggles or a mental illness, and build upon strengths that lead toward a more satisfying and meaningful life. My therapy style is interpersonal in nature which means I rely on building a strong relationship with my clients as the main avenue of change. My areas of expertise include working with clients facing any of the following issues: depression, anxiety, relationship distress, eating/body image, sexual, career uncertainty, and identity (race, nationality, sexual orientation, (trans)gender, age, religion/spirituality).

As a systems oriented psychotherapist, I believe that we are connected to and affected by those around us. Our families of origin, communities, cultures, workplaces and families of choice impact our lives and sense of self. Relationships and experiences we have had in the past influence who we are and how we relate to the world. To live with the greatest joy and productivity we must heal past relational traumas and bring to consciousness effects they have had in our lives. By doing so, we are free to make thoughtful choices about how we live our lives and relate to others.

All people are one of a kind, but here's where we're all alike: All of us come from a personal history and context: A past that got us through to where we are now. And "Right Now" is where all the choices and opportunities are. Some things we may want to change, other things we may choose to accept as they are. Therapy can be helpful in understanding yourself well enough to know which is which. And therapy can offer some things you may need to go forward with your choices: Hope, perspective and someone who believes in you while you practice believing in yourself.

As a therapist, I believe that we are capable of many things. We have resources within ourselves to move through the difficulties that come with life. I view my approach to therapy as client-centered, strengths-based, intersectional feminist, neurodivergent-affirming, and fat liberationist. As a client-centered therapist, I will focus on your therapeutic goals and the best way to achieve them using your strengths. I view my work as walking beside you on your journey rather than leading the way.

Ever made to feel never enough? Do you fear how others would react if you were to make a mistake, share your authentic self, or reveal your family or relationship is not as picture perfect? Are you haunted by your past, worried about the future, or feel in some way “broken”? We all learn ways to cope when in an invalidating environment. Perhaps you are the supportive rock for your friends that believe you have it all together. Maybe you learned it was safest to be invisible, perfect, or take care of everyone but yourself. These strategies have at one time helped, but are now keeping you from living the life that you want.

Do you long for better relationships in your life? Would you like to understand more about yourself and how you relate to those around you? Do you feel like you're alone or like you are the only one who feels the way you feel? Do you notice similar things happening in your relationships over and over again? Group therapy feels scary at first for most of us, but it can be the perfect place to work on issues like these. Whether introverted or extraverted, we are all inherently social creatures. Healing in community with others is natural to our species but is an art that many of us have lost.

I am passionate about coming into the Here and Now with clients and believe in the healing power of being witnessed with presence and loving kindness. Using mindfulness based practices I focus on supporting clients in addressing issues of depression, anxiety, and identity issues. In session I emphasize bringing the client’s attention out of thoughts/stories and into their present moment bodily experience with the understanding that more immediate change can occur this way. I enjoy experiencing the client and counselor relationship as a microcosm of the client’s greater relational life, and an opportunity to do deep healing.

Transgender Therapists

As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?

A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?

Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?

An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?

Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
