Major Depression, Anxiety, and Trauma: I have worked with individuals who suffer from these Dx, as as well as learning and physical disabilities-ADHD, and/or other academic/learning barriers that get in the way of reaching one's goals.
We all become (at some point) shackled to a stuck version of ourselves. Being vulnerable enough to choose something other than our perfectly practiced persona can seem ~impossible. Is your ~asker too broken to learn another way? It takes courage to recreate, redefine, and let go of what doesn't work! "I Don't Know," become very important words when we choose to sail the rough seas...and yet, the risk can be so beautiful. It becomes excruciatingly clear that the pain of staying where we are, must become more acute than leaping into something wonderfully new!

Life throws us a curveball from time to time. Stressors that you maybe could've coped with in the past now feel overwhelming. Symptoms that you had kept at bay for years, are now making it hard to function. Sleepless nights, panic attacks, avoiding leaving the house, arguments with your partner, snapping at your kids...maybe even thinking that you wish it would all just stop because you're so tired. It doesn't have to be this way. Now is the time to reach out for support.

The demands of the modern world leave many of us feeling isolated and overwhelmed, and the ripple effects impact every facet of our lives. Depression, anxiety, and burnout are common symptoms of our efforts and struggles to meet these demands. When we are bogged down in these emotional states it can be difficult to keep up with the basics of survival, much less see a path forward.

Are you a parent concerned about your teenager? What parent isn't, right? Or maybe you've just struck out on your own, exploring college and adulthood for the first time. The years from 16 to 25 bring so much physical, emotional, and social change. Everyone needs some extra support during this time. Whether it's withdrawing from friends, worrying excessively, lacking confidence, experiencing heartbreak, or seeing grades drop, talking to someone about it can help. Really! There's proof. All of those studies can't be wrong.

The heaviness of walking through this life can get to be too much to bear sometimes. Working 40+ hours per week, raising kids, tending to relationships, cooking healthy foods, making sure you get enough exercise, etc., etc. It's a lot. It's easy for things to get off track. To feel exhausted down to your very bones. And when it is time to rest, it's hard to shut off the spinning thoughts about the future, money, climate change, health issues, past wounds....you name it. No matter your particular unique journey, life can be filled with challenges.

Many people who are new to therapy understandably want to know what to expect before their first session. In brief, you talk and I listen, that’s the foundation. We'll get to know each other and we'll decide if we work well together. I'll ask questions. I’ll tell you what I hear and offer feedback. We’ll collaborate. You’ll correct me when I’m off and we’ll work to get to the bottom of things. Notably, I’ll direct your attention toward the different ways you feel, moment-to-moment, because these feelings help reveal who we are and what we need.

I was drawn to counseling over the years because I enjoy helping others grow and develop into the best version of themselves. During my own life, I have overcome my own challenges and would like the opportunity to provide support to others on their journey whatever that looks like for them.

I see my role as a counselor as providing empathy, unconditional acceptance, and genuineness to create a space that you, the client, can use for self-exploration and holistic growth. Another part of my role is helping to focus the counseling session on your inner experience to increase your awareness of your values, emotions, and ways of relating to others. A typical counseling session involves the client exploring their moment-to-moment inner experience, and me facilitating this exploration by asking questions, offering my observations, and reflecting back what I am hearing.

Live life intentionally. This is how most of us want to live our lives, with energy and purpose, spending our time doing those things that bring us joy and meaning, pursuing our dreams, aspiring to be the best versions of ourselves that we can be. Often, difficult thoughts and feelings get in the way of being the person we want to be for ourselves, for our loved ones, and sabotaging our vision of the life we’ve always dreamt of living. We get stuck. And in that inertia, it can be easy to lose contact with the things that matter the most to us in our lives. We may act in ways that are inconsistent with our values and goals.

Healing crises occur throughout our lives and are often brought forth in times of transition and loss. I believe these times provide opportunities for development in our relationships with others and ourselves. Therapy is a healthy way of working through crisis and transition. I have worked for over 10 years with adults and children who are healing from recent and past traumas and/or loss. My training and experience includes working with sexual traumas, domestic violence, substance dependence, and co-dependency issuses. I focus on helping clients tell their stories and identify beliefs and coping strategies that are unhelpful.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
