Perhaps the greatest benefit to reaching out to any therapist is the beginning of a journey to self-discovery and empowerment. We all know that life offers joys and challenges. Sometimes the challenges, distresses and/or pain becomes overwhelming. Through my personal and professional experiences as a former teacher and now LMFT, we can explore together the hidden strengths within you so you can once again appreciate the person inside you. It is through the door of awareness and understanding that change takes place.

Welcome to True North Counseling, I am Peggy Russell, and I honor this step you are taking to care for and invest in yourself through therapy. It is my belief that being seen and heard in the caring non-judgmental presence of another creates an environment where deep healing can occur. I practice from a mind-body holism approach, meaning I honor the inseparable union of mind and body. Many of my clients benefit from somatic healing where years of talk therapy has only touched the surface. Together we will navigate a path towards understanding the natural somatic and emotional responses associated with difficult life events.

I am passionate in helping people identify and resolve whatever is holding them up and set them free to live lives of joy and hope. People often find themselves stuck, missing opportunities, making the same mistakes over and over again, and getting discouraged. Sometimes trying harder just isn't enough. It gets too overwhelming. It is easy to believe things will never get better. But I don't think that is how it is meant to be. We were meant to be creative and curious, have connections with others, feel calm and alert, and see the beauty in everyday things. No one was meant to just slog through life feeling down on themselves.

Individuals experience circumstances within the context of a system. In relationship therapy, my philosophy is to take into account each person within different systems including, family, couples, children, extended family, and relationships within your workplace. Each individual adds to the dynamic of relationships through his or her experiences. My clinical focus is through the lens of attachment, that is, how are the bonds we are creating effective or ineffective in our current lives. You are the expert in your own experiences. I collaboratively work with you to define, encourage, and assist, in a safe and trusting environment.

I am passionate about helping people get "unstuck" in life, relationships, and business. I believe everyone has the potential to create their best self, the healthiest version of themselves, and live the life they desire. Often times, because of challenges, pain, disappointments, and the hard "stuff" in life, people, including myself, get stuck and having a hard time moving forward. Hopelessness, depression, anxiety, sadness, low motivation, frustration, high-stress, and irritability are some of the emotions we may experience during these seasons. It can have a negative impact on our relationships, our work, and overall well-being.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
