“We don’t have to do all of it alone. We were never meant to.” Brenée Brown We are resilient human beings who go through life trying not to be too banged up, and sometimes we get broken. There is a Japanese art form that I love called Kintsugi, where one fixes the broken pot with gold or silver to highlight where it was once broken and thus rendering it beautiful again. Trauma and addiction make us feel like we are broken inside, I work with you to apply your gold or silver highlights.

Are you struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, or intimate partner violence? Maybe you are learning to navigate a new neurodivergence diagnosis or exploring your identity. On our journey through life, sometimes our path can seem to disappear in front of us. Our usual skills no longer hold and guide us through the experiences and systems we are navigating. In these trying times, a helping hand can make all the difference, and that is where art therapy comes in.

My professional belief is that beginning psychotherapy is like embarking on a "Hero's Journey". Clients brave facing their fears in a safe, secure environment in order to create the lives they want to live. Many times, I meet clients who think that therapy is about fixing what is "wrong" with them. I believe, however, that therapy is really more about fostering clients' ability to connect with what is "right" with them. I support people in fully embracing who and what they really are - without fears. It would be my privilege to be your guide on this journey.

I utilize an insight and awareness oriented style of therapy that is committed to authenticity and humor when possible. More than half of my clients are involved in or exploring ethical non-monogamy or a queer sexual orientation but the most important thing I look for in clients is just a good therapy chemistry between us. I prioritize new clients with Kaiser health insurance due to a new and specific contract I have with them.

Contemporary relational Gestalt therapist trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy, Polyvagal Theory, and Cognitive Processing Therapy.
When someone comes to counseling it’s because they want something to change. I believe change happens by trying to be who we are rather than trying to be different. I believe it’s important to have space to embody, explore, and learn about core aspects of the human experience, including sexuality and gender. By acting as a curious and non-judgmental other, I can help clients explore and accept all parts of themselves.

I am trained in Hakomi, Internal Family Systems, Gestalt, Terry Real's Relational Life Therapy, and Emotions Focused Therapy for individuals and couples.
I work with couples and individuals who are neurodivergent, and/or have complex trauma. I believe compassion and loving-presence are essential to understanding the parts of ourselves that feel tender and/or condemned. It isn’t uncommon for these tender parts to appear to be stuck in patterns that seem to further disconnect us from ourselves and others. My work is anti-oppressive, relational, humorous, and client-centered.

I blend a number of approaches, including Relational Life Therapy, EFT, Gottman Method, Attachment, Somatic, Gestalt, IFS, Existentialism, and Psychodynamic therapies and theories.
I work with couples emphasizing non-traditional, queer, and marginalized genders, sexualities, and identities who feel stuck, hopeless, frustrated, and want to return to, build for the first time, or reinforce a relationship of compassion, love, acceptance, commitment, and desire; one where you feel like you're on the same team vs. battling opponents wondering "how did we get here?" I work with folks who want to explore communication issues, polyamory/ENM, kink, differing levels of desire, ambivalence, jealousy, power and control issues, curiosities about uncoupling consciously, and more.

Gestalt Therapists

What is gestalt therapy?

Gestalt therapy is based on the idea that to address unresolved negative feelings, emotions must be not only discussed but also actively expressed in the present moment. The term is from a German word meaning “whole,” and gestalt therapists believe that people should be considered whole entities made up of mind, body, and emotions. Gestalt sessions are rooted in the notion that a client’s total self must be discovered, explored, and confronted, so that they can take greater responsibility for themselves and their behavior, learn to satisfy their own needs while still respecting the needs of others, and reconnect with feelings they might otherwise deny.

How does gestalt therapy work?

Gestalt therapy sessions do not just involve talking with a therapist. Clients may take part in role-playing, re-enactment, or artistic exercises like drawing and painting, with the goal of becoming more aware of negative thought patterns that limit happiness. One common gestalt exercise is “the empty chair,” in which a client sits across from an empty chair representing a partner, relative, boss, or a part of themselves—and, with the therapist’s encouragement, improvises a dialog with it. The intention is to bring the emotions raised by past conflicts into the present and work through them in the moment.

How long does gestalt therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for gestalt therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. New patients should understand that it may take some time to become comfortable with gestalt exercises but once they do, they should expect sessions to extend for a number of months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions.

Does gestalt therapy work?

Gestalt therapy has generally been found to be as effective as other forms of talk therapy in helping people living with anxiety, depression, phobias, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders, as well as helping individuals reduce conflict in relationships. Gestalt techniques, on their own or in combination with other therapies, can also be effective in managing physical ailments including ulcerative colitis, migraines, and back spasms. It should be noted that some people may have trouble adapting to gestalt therapy’s lack of formal structure or to a therapist’s close observations of their body language and emotions; others may struggle to commit to techniques that feel unnatural, like the empty chair exercise.
