It is my belief that even though people seem to differ in their inborn ability to handle life's stresses, their resiliency and sense of mastery can be cultivated. My therapeutic approach is to help my clients live a more hopeful and meaningful life. Being the oldest child of a Dutch family of Holocaust survivors, I "learned" how trauma and resiliency gets transmitted from one generation to the next. My fascination of learning how the body keeps the score, my interest in helping people be securely attached and engaged with each other all brought me to this exciting calling.

I work with individuals and couples who are adjusting to a change in their life or find themselves "stuck" in patterns of behaviors or moods that disturb them. Examples include relationship stress, anxiety, depression, family of origin issues and addiction/abuse concerns. Some times this is a result of a loss of a loved one, a change in relationship status or employment status. Sometimes the cause is not apparent.

As a queer person, I believe my client's when they tell me about their histories & their hopes for the future.
Hi! We might be a good fit if you live in Oregon & a few of these questions resonate for you: What is working within my current relationship(s)? What would healthy & holistic boundaries look like for us? What patterns are my partner(s) & I stuck in? What realities do we dream for our relationship(s)? How does my community & our shared history support me as I create a meaningful life? How do I process how others' histories, traumas or pain contributed to their harmful impact on me? How do I navigate grief & loss?

As we work with gay, lesbian and bisexual clients, we recognize the hetero-normative society that we often live in.
Life transitions bring new opportunities for personal growth, communication development, and emotional connectedness. With couples & families, our approach is to deepen the bond by focusing more effective communication while understanding the needs of the relationship, Individual therapy centers from life experiences of resilience & strength, redefinition of self, challenges around family history, or a recognition of new life boundaries. As we work with younger clients, we utilize interventions in our play therapy room to provide an environment open and welcoming to the needs of everyone.

My clinical approach is rooted in CBT, ERP, and ACT and is informed by an anti-oppressive/anti-racist and pro queer/LGBTQ+ approach with a focus on my client’s strengths.
Change is possible. A diagnosis of OCD or another anxiety disorder can be scary and confusing. It can feel like your life is defined by dread, worry, fear, and exhaustion. Much of your energy and time are likely spent trying to present to the outside world as “successful” and “having it all together”. Internally, you may feel disconnected from your core self, your innate purpose and potential, and the ability to enjoy simple moments in your life. Anxiety doesn’t have to define who you are as a human. Therapy is courageous work. I’m glad you’re here making this first step.

LGBTQ+ Therapists

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialized training, either during their degree program or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalization in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialized training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
