As a Marriage and Family Therapist, I use an eclectic approach that includes Experiential, Emotion Focused, Multigenerational, Narrative, Cognitive Behavioral, Motivational Interviewing and Solution Focused modalities.
I like to think of therapy as an adventure, one that can appear arduous, moves at different speeds, has different agendas and at times has little or big unknowns that sprout up, all as a result of working through where you have been while working on what you would like to create. During this adventure I will be here to journey with you and to watch as you embrace healing and life unfolds in entirely new ways for you!

I help people who have been considered "non-traditional" in many ways, people who have been "othered", and felt like outsiders their whole lives. Perhaps you are feeling disconnected, stuck in patterns, at a crossroads, hitting a wall, desiring change or needing nonjudgmental guidance. You don't have to do this alone. Prioritizing your healing is a powerful way we positively impact ourselves and others. Together we create a supported container for whatever you bring, to facilitate deep understanding and create workable sustainable solutions. I specialize in trauma, transgender identities and ADHD. Offering ASD/ADHD assessments.

Past trauma and sexuality struggles seem to be more common that most people believe. Many of us have experienced trauma (and/or sexual trauma) in our past...it is time to escape from that prison. We need more therapists trained to handle these struggles. As a sex-positive therapist I can help you grow and thrive in your chosen environment as you navigate the shifts and transitions we all experience in this life. I also supervise new therapists as they gain experience in this helping profession

I consider psychotherapy to be a collaborative effort between client and therapist. My name is Jacob and I founded Root Insights because I view my clients as experts of their own lives, I believe in your ability to make choices for yourself. My approach is positive, integrative, and holistic. A holistic approach to therapy looks at issues concerning mind, body and spirit. For example: Mind – People tend to feel the way they think. Negative feelings like guilt, anger, and depression may not result from the things that happen, but from the way you think about these events. This simple but revolutionary idea can change your life.

My approach draws from many modalities but primarily Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and Solution Focused Therapy.
I love working with people who are ready to learn, grow and change. I have the most experience working with young children 0-11 and their parents. I enjoy working with adults with their individual needs as well. Children and adults who have experienced trauma and attachment wounds and are ready to learn how to heal and become empowered are my favorite people to work with. I am also interested in working with individuals who are exploring gender identity.

I use an addiction treatment model, an attachment model, and cognitive- behavioral therapy (CBT) to help addicts in recovery.
Sexual addiction (SA) is a hidden addiction. It is a global problem, under-reported, and largely untreated. SA harms relationships, creates relational trauma for partners, and damages trust and intimacy in relationships. Addicts often engage in secrecy and feel shame and guilt about their behavior. Partners often feel betrayed and traumatized by the addicts behavior. Intimacy issues are often an underlying concern for both individuals and for couples. Like other addictions, SA can get progressively worse over the years. If untreated, SA can lead to relationship loss, divorce, job loss. financial problems, and legal problems.

What happens in therapy for behavioral issues?

No matter the type of therapy, individuals form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is often therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Individuals learn to identify situations that are especially troublesome for them and acquire new patterns of thinking and behaving. In therapy for ADHD, one of the most common behavior issues for children, individuals learn how to improve frustration tolerance, control impulsivity, manage attentional focus, and gain skills of self-organisation.

What therapy types help with behavioral issues?

Many types of therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Perhaps best-known and most widely tested is cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT), in which individuals learn new behavioral strategies and curb reactivity to frustrating or distressing situations that trigger disruptive behaviour. Anger, anxiety, mood disorders, impulse control problems are commonly addressed in CBT. Family therapy or parent management training is often helpful to reduce parent-child conflict and behavioral difficulties at home.

How long does therapy last for behavioral issues?

Among popular approaches to treating behavioral concerns, CBT is considered a short-term therapy intended to be administered in 15 to 20 weekly sessions. Parent training in behavior management, often used when the underlying cause of behavior issues is ADHD in children under 12, usually occurs in weekly sessions for 8 to 16 weeks. When behavioral issues stem from persistent aggression or defiance, therapy may last for months, and usually targets both children and their parents.

How effective is therapy for behavior issues?

Studies show that therapy for behavior issues in children is highly effective and may prevent the development of antisocial behavior later in life. Family intervention—parent management training or family therapy, both of which involve parents and children together—is considered most effective, notably for children under age 12 who persistently engage in aggressive, defiant, rule-breaking or other disruptive behavior. Whether provided alone or in combination with medication, CBT is highly effective in helping people regulate their emotions, and for people with ADHD, it addresses impulsiveness, hyperactivity and attentional focus.
