To work through relational conflict or the pain of infidelity it is important to find a skilled couple's therapist who will provide you a safe and empathic environment along with the willingness to develop a team approach toward your intended goal.
I often hear: "If only we could communicate better, the simplest of discussions become arguments." "I had an affair, I was so stupid, can you help me to heal my relationship?" "My spouse had an affair, I am devastated, I don't know if I should leave or stay?" "I told my spouse everything and the affair is over, why can't we just move on?" If any of these quotes sound true for you, I want you to know that you can learn to reduce conflicts to rebuild trust and intimacy; you can heal and repair your relationship after regrettable incidents, infidelities/ affairs.

Oftentimes couples are unaware they are missing essential skills to healthy and lasting relationships until conflict becomes repetitive and destructive. Through the tools, training, and counseling I provide, couples are able to process past hurts, establish skilled communication, develop empathy for the other, and move together toward connection.

Hello, my name is Steven Cohn. Since the onset of Covid 19 I am currently conducting all of my couples sessions via teleconferencing. I meet with couples who live anywhere in Oregon, including Bend, Eugene, and Ashland. My clients are reporting that our online sessions feel just as meaningful and productive as our in-office sessions. If love, intimacy, and passion has faded from your relationship, then I'm here to help. Poor communications, financial problems, low sexual desire, blending a family, child rearing, an affair, in-laws, and/or health concerns can slowly erode relationship vitality in even the most loving unions.

Couples therapy is my passion. Given the chaos and the way in which human relationships are being undermined in our world today, I feel this work is particularly needed. As far as human happiness goes, I see time and time again that it is the quality of a person’s relationships that makes it or breaks it. This is really the foundation of my couples therapy practice. More than ever, the world needs couples who have each other’s backs, and can bring empathy and intelligent action into the world.

Nothing has been more exciting and gratifying for me as a therapist than the moment I can see someone recognizing the patterns and thoughts which have been keeping them from the happiness and joyful life they deserve. Those moments can be the spark that starts a whole new way of thinking and living for someone. In a world that is often rich in negative emotions and destructive behavior, every new spark that can help change the way a single person feels and acts can help others too. Every great journey begins with a single step.

Hello! My name's Dr. Bohrer and I'm a psychologist, as well as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), and Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC level III). I began working in the field of psychology in 2007, so there's not much I haven't seen or heard. I believe therapy should be a place where you're free to share whatever you want but not forced to disclose anything until you're comfortable doing so. Therapy doesn't have to be an intimidating or daunting experience. I invite humor into therapy sessions and welcome you to do the same.

Are you living life to the fullest? What do you need to help you thrive? Sometimes counseling is focused on coping and healing. Sometimes it's more about personal or relational growth and awareness. It is an honor when people come and are able to trust enough to begin the counseling work. Counseling is such a courageous undertaking. It begins with listening and respect, evolving into a cooperative effort. I strive to offer my clients a safe place to start and a balanced perspective in the change process. I hope I can help you come to a place of wellbeing.

Infidelity Therapists

How does therapy for infidelity work?

A skilled infidelity therapist will provide a safe space for clients to communicate their feelings and concerns. The goal is to be completely honest about what led to the cheating and how it has affected the entire family to prevent it from recurring in the future. The therapist will help the clients work on rebuilding mutual trust and respect and developing better communication and conflict-resolution skills. If the goal is to remain a couple, clients will learn the “danger signs” for their specific relationship, and they will make a renewed commitment to be faithful.

How long does therapy for infidelity take?

Recovery from infidelity can take time, and it can vary from person to person. Generally, a therapist will want to see the clients at least once a week for around six months. Then the sessions can be arranged as needed, depending on the clients’ individual needs. While therapy may end or shift to an as-needed basis, it can take up to two years or more for some clients to fully recover from infidelity.

How does therapy help the partner who was cheated on?

When a client discovers their partner’s infidelity, their trust in the relationship and in the life they had together may be shattered. They often experience mental health symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, grief, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They don’t always want to stay in the relationship; they may feel ambivalent or may even want to leave. Therapy gives these clients a safe and healthy way to communicate all of their complicated emotions and concerns.

How does therapy help the partner who committed infidelity?

Infidelity often occurs when one or both partners’ emotional needs are not being met in the relationship. Therapy can help this client understand why they cheated and figure out how to address those unmet needs without resorting to infidelity in the future. This can lessen (but not entirely eliminate) the risk of repeated infidelity. Clients who cheat may also feel intense guilt about deceiving their partners, a sentiment that they can work through in therapy.
