As a psychologist specializing in children and adolescents I am best suited to provide a clear idea of problems, developing an effective treatment plan, working with families, schools and other support services to create effective positive change. Only by focusing on parents' concerns, supporting their parenting style can satisfactory treatment occur.

Hello! My name's Dr. Bohrer and I'm a psychologist, as well as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), and Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC level III) I began working in the field of psychology in 2007, so there's not much I haven't seen or heard. I believe therapy should be a place where you're free to share whatever you want but not forced to disclose anything until you're comfortable doing so. Therapy doesn't have to be serious and heavy all the time. I have a fairly direct communication style but also invite humor into the session regularly.

I approach therapy as a collaborative process with my clients identifying areas they want to improve then working with them toward achieving those goals. Whether in relation to managing general life stressors, family or relationship problems, addiction, mood or anxiety disturbance, sexually-related challenges, or employment issues, I conceptualize my role as supporting clients to identify, then enact the choices most likely to produce the changes they desire.

I provide useful and in-depth psychotherapy in Oregon, California, New York, & Connecticut. People are in a constant developmental process, whereby symptoms are signs of ongoing struggles to sort through past experiences while organizing oneself in present living. Depression, anxiety, & personality traits are markers of this process. Therapy with me would seek to aid in your understanding of how & why you live the way you do, and hopefully lead to change. My hope is that we can find a way for you to live more fully and for problems to be comprehensively understood, formulated and articulated, and resolved in a sustained way.

I have specialized training in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic therapies, mindfulness, cognitive behavioral techniques, and forensic psychology.
I practice a dynamic style of therapy that is rooted in creating a supportive, caring environment where we establish a good working relationship that fosters self-awareness and insight. I work in-depth with you to discover how past family experiences may (often unconsciously) influence present day issues. We work to understand how difficult situations of the past contribute to longstanding frequently dysfunctional behavior patterns or negative self-perceptions. Therapy can help heal painful emotional wounds and relieve symptoms, improve self-acceptance and coping, improve relationship quality and overall life and work satisfaction.

I believe each individual has both the capacity and the right to change and to grow. It is my duty to be aware of the whole person and never to reduce him or her to a mental health challenge or diagnosis. Whole people have their own set of circumstances physically, emotionally, educationally and spiritually as well as other facets. I subscribe to a meta-approach. I employ multiple types of treatment modalities. I take these and with the person being served, weave a set of treatments that will best address whatever needs are being presented as obstacles to thriving.

Forensic Psychology Therapists
How does forensic psychology work?
Forensic psychology works by providing those in the legal system with expert information about psychology and behavior that they wouldn’t otherwise have. Forensic psychologists do this through a range of services—conducting psychological assessments for court cases, assisting police officers with investigations, providing expert opinion, helping with mediation, and providing mental health care to victims or perpetrators of crimes.
Can a forensic psychologist help with child custody cases?
Yes. In the event that it’s needed, an attorney or judge may appoint a forensic psychologist to provide an assessment and recommendation. This process involves multiple interviews with the child, the parent (or parents), and sometimes others. The psychologist assesses the parent’s mental health, strengths and weaknesses, and parenting practices to understand what’s in the child’s best interest. They then complete a report with recommendations based on their assessment.
Do forensic psychologists help solve crimes?
In some cases they do. For example, criminal profiling involves collaborating with law enforcement officers to construct a profile of a perpetrator based on psychology, personality, and behavior as suggested by the crime in order to focus the investigation. They may also offer expert input on subjects related to a case such as deception, false confessions, and the reliability of testimony based on eyewitness accounts.
How long do people typically work with a forensic psychologist?
The length of time an individual works with a forensic psychologist depends on the relevant service. For example, if a forensic psychologist is conducting a psychological assessment for a court case, this may take one to two sessions to complete (although they can be more extensive). If the forensic psychologist is providing therapy to someone accused or convicted of a crime, treatment may last for several months or more.
