Empowerment comes from being open to exploring your inner strength as a means of gaining insight and knowledge. I strive to provide a safe, nonjudgmental, compassionate space for self-discovery. Through the Empowerment Model I use an eclectic, client centered, and strength based approach to finding healing and growth in the midst of challenges. By exploring the origin of symptoms and how they influence thoughts and behaviors we can overcome obstacles to feeling genuine health and wellness.

Experience passion in your marriage and fun in your family. You've spent years building an exceptional family, career, and life but recently have hit a snag. It might be a lack of intimacy in your marriage, a child who isn't thriving in school, sports, or emotional health, or a feeling that you're stuck--simultaneously overwhelmed and uninspired.

I believe that people can change and often need assistance during the process. I believe that relationships are worth investing in and couples can learn to relate to each other more effectively. I believe sometimes people become stuck trying to do the right thing, or figure out what is the right thing. I believe people often need encouragement to push past where they are stuck. I believe we all can benefit and learn from hearing a different perspective.

Sometimes you are "tired of the rut I am in" or feeling that "something needs to change..I do not want to feel like this anymore." Sometimes you are struggling with "old issues" and sometimes it is more current stresses like anxiety, relationships, or just do not know what to do next; I believe when you are ready to make a change, having a supportive push can really work!

I'm a therapist with a real passion for working with women during difficult transitions such as going to college, experiencing heartbreak, becoming pregnant, learning how to be a parent, and separation and divorce. During these times, we discover reserves of inner strength that we never knew we had. If we can open ourselves up to new ways of interacting with painful experiences, it can unlock the door to honest and vulnerable communication and a greater capacity for love. I treat a variety of traumas including acute trauma, childhood or attachment trauma, sexual trauma, and medical trauma.

I believe that we all experience struggles in life, both within ourselves and through challenging circumstances. These struggles can result in trauma, anxiety, depression, brain and body changes, influence our sense of self-worth, identity, belief in our abilities, the world around us, and otherwise limit us . So often, these struggles can impact our relationships, career, and long-term well-being. Clients who want to address these, and other, concerns head on in a supportive manner with a trauma lens and utilize treatment guided by science and a neuro-biological approach would enjoy my approach to therapy.

I utilize a combination of psycho-education, strengths-based, and skills-training approaches. I am goal-directed and like to work strategically on the things that are priority areas for my clients. I draw heavily on cognitive/narrative approaches (examining the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves, other people, and the world).

Sometimes life can feel overwhelming. An unexpected event can suddenly throw everything off balance, or many smaller stresses can build up until it seems impossible to cope with them. These places can feel especially demoralizing if they challenge your self-efficacy--your ability to cope with problems on your own. You are not alone. At times, everyone needs help navigating through life's passages. I believe we all have the capacity to find a deeper, more meaningful life. I can work with you to help you regain your footing to continue your journey stronger than you were before.

When someone asks about my favorite parts of the day, my mind usually goes to the moments when I was able to meaningfully connect with another person. Something powerful happens when we are able to honestly share ourselves with someone who is attuned and reflectively listening. In moments like these there is often a level of healing, relief, and deeper knowledge gained about oneself. Regardless of where you find yourself or what you are facing, I look forward to connecting with you.

Even when we feel stuck, hurt or confused; our mood or life feel off balance; or our relationship has lost it's way, with the right support, we can draw upon existing strengths and wisdom to take the leap into transitions towards a better life for ourselves. I work with couples, seeking a bridge back to one another when distance, conflict or communication difficulties have taken away their sense of connectedness and understanding. I work with individuals to help them find a sense of clarity and resilience to clear away obstacles or heal painful memories that seem insurmountable.

I meet with all of my clients virtually which allows me to reach individuals who lead busy lives, live in rural areas or other countries, have barriers to making in-person appointments, or simply prefer being in their own space. I believe that accessing mental health care should feel safe, easy, and comfortable. My practice is grounded in the notion that you don't have to feel stressed out to be successful.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
