Being human did not come with a set of instructions, but perhaps it should have. So often, humans find themselves in the mess of suffering, pain, and social programming that gets in the way of being our authentic selves. I, myself, am human first, therapist second (& ya know... 1000 things in between). I see therapy as a way to recenter and come back into YOUR own knowing. Therapy is the conscious participation in your own evolution. And I am here to assist you on your journey to evolve into the human you want to be.

This allows treatment to be tailored specifically to the individual in a way that can most effectively help to create change, lower distress, increase growth, and alleviate pain.
To reveal and work through one's difficulties can be scary, but fulfilling and enriching. Thus, I work to create a trusting, supportive environment free of judgement that allows for a safe space to dive into the depths of one's unique story and what brings them to treatment. Therapy can be a powerful process in which one can gain new insights, decrease distress and suffering, uncover strengths and limitations, and improve relationships both with one's self and others. I will treat you with compassion, empathy, encouragement, and honesty as we navigate the therapeutic process together.

Suffering with emotional pain can leave us feeling disoriented and miserable in the present, and discouraged and afraid about the future. Yet we all have an innate impulse to survive, heal, and recover. You're heeding that impulse right now—all we need to begin your journey of healing is for you to keep heeding it. We'll discover the rest together, one step at a time. Imagine getting to know new parts of yourself and giving them the attention they’ve been yearning for. Hopping out of bed in the morning feeling whole, healthy, and positive. Meeting life’s difficulties with skill and finesse instead of brute force.

Welcome! Most clients who seek me out are overwhelmed. They may be dealing with life transitions like separation, divorce, single parenting, empty nesting, or career changes. They may feel alone and need help moving forward. Sometimes they are doing their best to juggle life's stresses while managing chronic illness or disability - whether that's their own autoimmune condition, their child's autism or ADHD, a partner's sudden stroke, or an aging parent's Alzheimer's. Above all, they want a personal connection with someone who believes in them and validates their feelings, experiences, and concerns.

People often ask why I work with people affected by trauma. Why? Because I am passionate about the lifelong impacts of undiagnosed and untreated trauma on a person’s life. I am also passionate about the resilience of people and their ability to heal when proper care is provided and barriers are removed. Trauma is treatable, and no one need be “stuck” with its long-term aftereffects. We can heal from trauma, and it would be a privilege to work with you on your healing journey. Finally, building safety, trust, and collaboration are at the heart of everything we do in our work together. And you are always in the lead.

How on earth are you supposed to choose something as important as a therapist from a two-dimensional blurb on the internet? Because it's impossible to really get a sense of who someone is from a listing, I invite you to reach out via phone, text or email, or you can visit my website & watch a short video of me & get a sense for my energy & style. Change doesn't have to take years of sessions, but it does take reaching out to get effective help, and I'd love the chance to be of assistance. These are some crazy times! COVID19 is scary, & the stress can load up on top of existing life issues, making everything feel so overwhelming.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
