It's tough out there, isn't it? Perhaps you're struggling with depression, worry, or stress. You may struggle with symptoms of trauma or a negative inner voice. Maybe you've tried therapy or self-help strategies before and been disappointed. It's certainly easy to feel discouraged. Yet healing is still possible, and I believe that goal-directed and evidence-based therapy is an effective way of facilitating that process. If you are seeking to deepen your self-awareness, build new habits, and develop a healthier relationship with yourself you have come to the right place.

If depression, anxiety, past trauma, addiction, or unhealthy relationships, are creating barriers in your life, don't suffer in silence alone. Come visit with me. My office is located in a beautiful nature setting by the river. I work with children and adolescents as well as adults, and enjoy working with couples and families in addition to individual therapy. I use compassion and unconditional acceptance to create a safe container in which to learn new ways of coping with, and moving past whatever situation you might find yourself in.

If you choose to be in therapy with me, we will work together to develop effective strategies to meet your goals. I will offer you an accepting space to discuss your thoughts, feelings, and experiences with compassion.

I see each person as uniquely shaped by their biopsychosocial make-up. Perhaps the very strategies that allowed you to feel safe and embedded in your family or community, have left you feeling limited by who you now know yourself to be. You may be seeking alignment with your authentic self. You may be feeling anxious, insecure, depressed or lonely. These experiences are deeply significant, come from somewhere, and are worthy of being curious about. Together we can get familiar with the once-brilliant adaptations that may no longer serve you. From that fertile place of deep empathy and accompaniment, new growth can emerge.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
