I would love to partner with community kids and families to help support their family from a holistic lens. I care about children's overall development as well as the entire family's quality of life. Parents are often stretched out thin and deserve a community to help support their unique family needs. Research shows that caregivers of children with special needs experience greater stress levels than caregivers of typically developing children. Caregivers deserve community support from an experienced therapist. We can set goals together to promote the goals that are important to your family.

Telehealth only. I am a holistic trauma therapist. I utilize Ego State work, Internal Family Systems, Compassionate Inquiry, and other approaches, with EMDR to address traumas big and small. I help people understand how their health and mental health are connected from a holistic and naturopathic lens. I myself have healed from several chronic and autoimmune conditions that came with mental health symptoms. This journey shaped my perspective as a therapist.

Now accepting new clients! Clients often come to me for support with relieving symptoms associated with trauma, attachment injuries, interpersonal problems, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, and low self-esteem. Right now you might feel stuck, directionless, without the skills you need to succeed, or find yourself in unhelpful patterns. Perhaps you have experienced a crushing loss. You're here because you desire to experience that you are strong, capable and worthy - to overcome, move forward, and be resilient. Life can be messy, hard, painful. I enjoy helping clients build skills for relief and developing resilience.

In addition to private practice I have experience in medical social work, hospice, LGBTQN? affiliates, geriatrics, outpatient mental health, teen educator, child development, and others.
Life experiences and transitions influence the way we live, and can be the main reason we are experiencing the types of distress we find ourselves in. They force us to let go of the familiar and face the future with a feeling of vulnerability. We can experience great loss, fear, and not knowing where or who to turn to.

Dr. Shelby is passionate about entering into the depths of religious and relational trauma, anxiety, perfectionism & burn-out, body image, existential dread, grief, and chronic suffering. It goes without saying these past few years have been an uphill battle. With the stress of a pandemic, the economic hardships facing many, and political divides deepening: it's no wonder anxiety is high. Or depression feels magnified. Or you find yourself falling back into bad habits.  But you don't have to struggle through this time alone. Empathic Counseling can help you cope during this difficult time and empower you to thrive. I work closely with clients across Oregon to help them find freedom from Anxiety, Depression, Addiction, Trauma, or that harsh voice inside you that tells you you're not enough.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
