I draw on interpersonal neurobiology to explore connections between emotions and human development and incorporate sensory experiences such as sand and art into sessions.
I help people living with depression, self-identity struggles, grief, trauma and have experience working within LGBTQIA+ and ethical non-monogamous communities. The children I see have/are experiencing abuse, behavior concerns, and life stressors. My role as a therapist is to offer authentic and genuine reflections and to help strengthen your mental capacity and confidence to handle internal and external stressors. I believe we all have a story to tell, some intertwined with tragedy and challenges, and that our time together is for you to tell yours. Note: I don't work with insurance companies; only out of pocket.

I work with patients who come for help with relationship problems, symptoms of anxiety and depression, as well as those with interpersonal trauma from relationships with family or partners.
A person's trajectory in life can be offset by stress, strain and compromises. Therapy can re-orient a person to their core needs and strivings, allowing them to become more effective and engaged at work, home, and in relationships. Imagining positive change for yourself is an important step and yet taking that step can be challenging. "The best time to plant a tree was yesterday; The second best time is now." I look forward to hearing about what's happening in your life now.

I work with individual adults who suffer from anxiety, depression, trauma, uncertainty and interpersonal struggles. Some clients I work with seek a respectful, supportive helper outside their everyday life, sometimes during a life transition or existential choice point. Other clients I work with seek focused assistance with moving forward in a healthy way after a traumatic event (or traumatic childhood).

I incorporate over 25 years of mind/body experience with studies in couple/family systems, humanistic psychology and interpersonal neurobiology.
Either working with an individual, couple or family, I come from the perspective that every person is wired for connection and seeks growth to embody their wisdom and wholeness. Individuals can heal from past experiences, move through difficult transitions, and learn to tolerate the stresses of modern life. When we are disconnected from our natural capacity, we can experience life as intolerable and forget our inherent worth. I believe in a collaborative approach to not only find relief from problems, but also to restore health and a sense of internal wholeness.

We can address whatever is causing you distress, including social or interpersonal behavior patterns that have not been working, or family of origin issues.
"...Psychotherapy...is as varied as human individuals. Treat every patient as individual as possible...the solution of the problem is always an individual one," wrote CG Jung. While living our lives we all go through periods of struggle and difficulty. From time to time help is needed in the form of counseling to assimilate and integrate the problems, and/or otherwise painful emotions. My approach to therapy is humanistic and client centered. I value each person as an individual. I will work collaboratively with you to nurture and support the healing and changes you envision for yourself.

Individuals experience circumstances within the context of a system. In relationship therapy, my philosophy is to take into account each person within different systems including, family, couples, children, extended family, and relationships within your workplace. Each individual adds to the dynamic of relationships through his or her experiences. My clinical focus is through the lens of attachment, that is, how are the bonds we are creating effective or ineffective in our current lives. You are the expert in your own experiences. I collaboratively work with you to define, encourage, and assist, in a safe and trusting environment.

I wonder what kind of therapists people scroll through psychology profiles to therapist shop for. When people ask me what my ideal client I actually wonder whats people's ideal therapists? I think this is important when thinking about an ideal client and therapists because I see it as a collaborative work. I'm not here to force you what I think is best for you, therapy is something both the client and therapist figure out together to meet the clients' needs and goals.

I believe that relationships and connection are at the core of healing. I address trauma through a blend of cognitive, emotional, and somatic approaches to empower my clients to transform their relationship with themselves and their past. My clients often live life with an emphasis on adventure and spend time in the outdoors, willing to address their personal work both inside and outside of session. They often are seeking a holistic roadmap to a more balanced life, grappling with issues like anxiety, depression, and unresolved trauma that shows up in issues such as relationship distress, panic, overwhelm, or lack of motivation.

Emotional wounding, loss, trauma, and unhealthy relationships often create a sense of overwhelm, heaviness and prolonged anxiety that can feel never-ending. Over time, it's common to become increasingly detached, stagnant and feel like it's impossible to connect with others in an authentic and meaningful way. Psychotherapy provides the unique opportunity to 'get real' with 'what is', allowing you to grow and heal in ways that will benefit all of your relationships, including (most importantly) the relationship that you have with yourself.

You work so hard to become a professional and then Wham, out of nowhere you begin to experience anxiety or a feeling that maybe you don't know what you are doing after all. Your supervisor's communication feels like sandpaper and you get emotional without apparent reason. The work just doesn't feel like what you expected and you just feel out of sorts. You begin to realize you are using substances and some pretty unhealthy behavior just to cope. I mean it was fine in college but now it keeps you from feeling good. You need support from someone that gets it. You just need to get back on track.

Is interpersonal therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found interpersonal therapy to be effective for life transitions including retirement, divorce, and job loss. Also, some studies have found it to be just as useful as medication and other therapy approaches. The benefits of interpersonal therapy can last long after treatment has been completed; the individual can use the tenets of this therapy throughout their life.

How long does interpersonal therapy take?

Interpersonal psychotherapy is normally time-limited and focuses on specific problems in the client’s everyday relationships. Treatment can be either one-on-one or take place in a group setting; it tends to last 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the individual client’s needs. If a new interpersonal problem arises in the future, the client may require additional therapy to address it specifically. The timeline and session schedule may vary depending on the client’s challenges as well as their progress. Treatment may conclude with wrap-up sessions to review the client’s accomplishments.

Is interpersonal therapy effective?

Research shows that interpersonal therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of conditions such as depression or anxiety. The approach may also offer a range of benefits that are hard to measure but valuable—including healthier relationships and improved feelings of self-worth. The therapist will give the client practical solutions that can be put into practice. The brief duration of this therapy also means that clients can see changes in their relationships fairly quickly.

What are the limitations of interpersonal therapy?

Interpersonal therapy may not effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as psychosis, chronic illness, or alcohol relapse. Because it is short-term in nature, it may not be the best approach for conditions that need to be tracked, though maintenance sessions are a viable approach under these circumstances.

Can interpersonal psychotherapy be done online?

Yes, interpersonal psychotherapy can be conducted effectively either in-person or online. A therapist with expertise in IPT will be able to adjust their techniques, such as role-playing, to better suit the online environment. Offering online IPT can make it more accessible for clients who have transportation difficulties; it also provides the ideal opportunity to explore challenges unique to digital relationships.
