Did you wake up this morning with a pit in your stomach? Are you feeling a sense of dread as you start your day? Are you feeling like you are never on top of work, school, relationships, parenting, or life in general? When was the last time you felt like you actually got anything on your mile long to-do list done? Are these “unprecedented times” wearing you down? Are you still thinking about that thing you said when you were hanging out with your friend? Are you feeling anxious about social commitments? Do you lay awake at night thinking about every little thing until you are spiraling out of control?

My training as a couples, marriage and family therapist leads me to view client functioning in terms of relationships. My goal is to help clients bring forth a self that feels true and real. I help clients learn to ask for and receive what they need from others, embracing life and life's challenges with courage, renewed spirit, and a sense of wholeness. When clients feel supported, validated, and understood they often find that symptoms of depression and anxiety are relieved. Working with me, clients will learn to access their inner resources as we generate solutions together.

I work primarily with anxiety, trauma, shame, life transitions, and relationship concerns. I work well with people who identify as conflict avoidant, people pleasers, or people who have trouble being vulnerable in relationships. I help people explore stories about themselves that are no longer serving them. I also enjoy supporting people in practicing grounding/mindfulness skills so they can be more present in their lives. I can also support people experiencing mild OCD related to morality.

It can be different. I believe in helping individuals on their paths toward flourishing relationships and insightful introspection. I am a first-generation Latino with white privilege. I grew up in a low-socioeconomic neighborhood. I began this journey with a desire for couples to build healthy foundations together, and for children to find their voice in the world around them. I utilize an attachment-based approach that emphasizes change occurring in the therapy room with an exploration of core emotions at the root. You can expect me to show up as the unique me because I value you bringing your unique self.

I have over 20+ years of experience treating trauma with neurobiological and attachment-based approaches.
Are you feeling stuck in the past and unable to move forward? Are you wanting to delve deeper into healing from a trauma event or upcoming stressful life event? Do you feel stuck and wish you were making faster progress than you have been from going to weekly psychotherapy sessions? In my experience, 3-4 hour therapy intensive sessions accelerate progress in a shorter period of time for faster trauma resolution. Healing can occur in a few days of therapy intensive sessions rather than over years of weekly sessions. The only openings I have at this time are for therapy intensive sessions and in my online CBT-I Insomnia class.

My approach is highly relational, attachment-based, and trauma-informed.
Therapy is a wonder to me. It’s a powerful space where we can nurture a safe environment to explore the painful aspects of the human experience. At times, we can undergo a profound feeling of being stuck or lost without knowing how to find relief. I love coming alongside people on that journey, bringing a curious, non-judgmental stance to your healing process. I'd want to give more gentle attention to both your light and shadow in hopes to reduce inner conflict and promote a deeper and more kind self-inquiry. Through compassion, warmth, and much-needed humor, my hope is to bring ease as you travel uneasy waters.

"David has been doing very effective, innovative and challenging deep attachment-based work since 1995 with children/families, couples, and adults of ALL ages.
From struggling to THRIVING. Become more fully "yourself." Enjoy relationship satisfaction. Strengthen connection to something bigger that is meaningful. Get relief from depression and anxiety (really!). Improve effectiveness at work. Feel more at home in your body, content. Mindful and present. LAUGH. Choosing a therapist that is both really good AND a great fit is important. There is a difference here you will experience from the get go. The office is in a 1930's Cape Cod style house...inviting & comfortable. With warmth and character. David is unusually relational and "real." Sessions are 60, 75 or 90 minutes rather than 50.

I serve adolescents and young adults who have a desire for understanding what is happening within them and discovering ways to improve their mental well-being as they develop. I strive to provide a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere where crying is accepted and laughter is encouraged. I deeply value getting to know an individual's true self and embracing the unique ways they see the world. My goal is to guide clients in learning skills and discovering their own personal strengths so that they can find confidence in their ability to heal and work through struggles on their own after counseling is complete.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
