Safety and comfort are two areas of focus for my treatment with my clients. These two factors allow my clients and I to work together to reach their desired goals. I believe that in order for the goals to be reached that it is vital that my clients are in an open, safe environment so that they feel they can speak what is on their mind. I utilize a variety of techniques such as mindfulness and cognitive behavioral based with my clients. I have experience working with anxiety, depression, bipolar, and obsessive-compulsive disorders. I have worked with various areas of concern such as grief, boundaries, communication skills, and anger.

I have had the opportunity to work with people from a wide range of backgrounds facing a wide range of challenges, including grief, anxiety and panic attacks, situational or workplace stressors, trauma and family of origin concerns, relationship issues and parenting concerns.
Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional." -Russ Harris. This quote embodies the heart of my practice. We can't avoid pain in our lives, but it doesn't have to control our lives or prevent us from enjoying a rich, meaningful values-driven life. My approach is trauma informed, client-centered, and I utilize Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, mindfulness, and an eclectic mix of skills and styles from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Radically Open Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, internal family systems, and narrative therapy . My style is warm, direct, and very collaborative, and I see the therapeutic relationship as a two-way street

Tired of feeling weighed down by anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, or health problems? Are you struggling to manage everything all at once? Hi, I'm Heather, a mental health therapist. Counseling can provide support to help you meet the demands of ADHD, anxiety, and depression that interfere with work, relationships, and parenting. I believe we can all use support in our lives as we navigate stressful times and I know it's hard to make time for therapy.

I have been working in the behavior health field for 40 years as a therapist as well as a clinical supervisor and administrator in small and large behavioral health organizations. I was born in Kentucky and have lived in Cincinnati area for over 30 years. I went to graduate school in West Virginia and am fully licensed in Ohio. After my years of administration, I found myself increasingly drawn back to doing more work directly with people, particularly those struggling with depression, anxiety and a relief from their day to day struggles.

Constant worry can seem normal and protective when living with an anxiety disorder, but eventually it keeps us from something we want. It may be an experience, a relationship, a job - a goal that seems in reach (for about three seconds) until anxiety steps in and says "But what if...?" This is the tipping point for most people, when they decide to do what they want instead of what anxiety demands. Anxiety and OCD are divas, never completely satisfied and always demanding more. But it is possible to experience these demands without giving in, and to live your life with choices.

My ideal client is ready to do the hard work of making real change in their life. Sometimes, people think change has to be big to start therapeutic services; it doesn’t. Sometimes, learning to breathe, decrease anxiety, and be more mindful of your strengths can become a great asset. Therapy doesn’t have to be forever; sometimes, you just need help getting through the now. I help individuals & families dealing with chronic illnesses and end of life. At times like those, crises often happen: medical conflict, spiritual conflict, familial conflict, financial concerns, housing and food insecurity.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
