I specialize in treating mood and anxiety disorders, including Major Depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, through use of person-centered, evidence-based treatment interventions such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and Prolonged Exposure (PE).
Being a therapist means to me that regardless of background or identity, I will do my utmost to provide for you a safe and non-judgmental therapeutic space so that we can explore challenging thoughts and ideas. I do my best work when we can focus our efforts in therapy on specific areas of concern relating to stress, mood and anxiety disorders. Throughout the course of therapy, we will find ways to break down those areas of concern and then structure treatment to suit your unique mental health goals. I’m confident that not only will you find therapy a positive experience, but one where you will see yourself getting better.

My approach to therapy is both focused on finding solutions and gaining understanding. First, I believe it is important to incorporate effective coping skills to mitigate the effects of any mental health concern. It is then often necessary to build insight as to the causes of these concerns in order to change problematic patterns in how we relate to ourselves and others. Anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship matters - I attempt to foster self-compassion and understanding in order to lighten the burden of difficult life situations.

While I see a wide range of clients, many of my clients have struggled with narcissistic family members or partners, dysfunctional families (now and in childhood), depression, and anxiety.
Have you spent your life overachieving, working hard, taking care of others, doing all the right things, and yet thing aren't working out how you expected them to? Are your relationships very often one-sided, where you give a lot but no one takes care of you? I see you. My practice focuses on those who have "done all the right things," and are wondering why things are still so hard. Unfortunately, being hard on ourselves, working hard, achieving all the things, and taking care of everyone around us doesn't often lead to the sort of healing and peace we long for.

My treatment philosophy is based on our capacity to heal. My primary means of treatment is EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). EMDR reprocesses traumatic memories. Our brains use thought patterns to bring ideas, feelings and sensations to the forefront without discrimination. In instances of unresolved trauma, our ability to move forward in our lives is blocked, because thought patterns allow past trauma to continue to be replayed as if happening in the present. I collaborate with my clients via EMDR to reprocess trauma, allowing the brain to let natural healing occur.

My approach is interactive, engaging my clients in conversations that help them process past or present events, so that they can find their own path to healing.

Participating in therapy, mindfulness, or any practice of healing or self development takes vulnerability and courage. I help hard working men and women who are impacted by stress and/or trauma to quickly uncover internal resources and to untangle sources of stress, so they can show up clear, calm, and connected with their families, at work, and everywhere in between. I see you. I know what you're going through. And I know that it seems easier to just keep pushing and getting things done than it is to stop. I know you wish you could "just get over it". If you are stuck and don't know what to do next, let's connect.

You're wanting to feel alive and comfortable in your own skin, but you find yourself freezing up or overwhelmed with images from the past or stuck in ways you can't explain. While talking about it can be helpful, if you're dealing with a trauma or ingrained stress response, it gets stuck in the body and talking alone doesn't unlock the trauma patterns in the body. Body-based modalities combined with talking really help to unwind trauma patterns. If you come see me, we won't only sit in chairs talking.

I feel it is important to offer expert quality care that is compassionate, and tailored to each person's uniqueness as an individual. I have 33 years of clinical experience working with children, teens, families, and adults facing various life challenges. Time passes quickly. We often spend our days unhappy, and stressed. Sometimes it can be difficult to see beyond the hardships, and realize what matters most to us. If you can't change a situation, change your perspective.

I work predominantly, but not exclusively, with male clients. I have been described as pragmatic (definition: "dealing with things sensibly and realistically in a way that is based on practical rather than theoretical considerations" & "the study of how context contributes to meaning.") My approach in counseling is well captured in these descriptions. We will approach things sensibly and realistically, seeking understanding, clarity, & truth. We will explore language and context to gain insight, guide decision making, and heal old wounds. We will work as partners to identify growth areas, resolve issues, set goals, & affect change.

Anxiety Therapists
What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
