You do not need to do this alone. Whether you are struggling yourself or looking for help for your teenager, it is important to recognize that effective help is available. My specialty areas include depression, self harm, relationship problems, stress management and life transitions. I believe that therapy should be more than "venting." I view you as a collaborator in setting concrete goals and working towards positive life changes and growth. I will be a supportive cheerleader, while pushing you to think about your life from a different perspective and to work towards a better version of yourself.

My specific areas of focus include: individual adult, adolescent, couples/relationship issues, parenting, communication, depression, anxiety, body image/weight concerns, self-esteem, and life transitions.
I believe in human resilience and the power of connection. I approach clients with an objective perspective, considering how all parts of their lives could impact their current experience. I try my best to listen openly in an effort to hone in the primary concerns of clients. While I view clients' pasts as affecting who they are and their current perceptions, I tend to focus on helping to improve the present and future experiences of clients. It feels most empowering to help clients discover their own answers, so I prefer to ask questions rather than tell clients 'what to do.'

I have several specialties: cognitive behavioral therapy for anxiety disorders (such as panic disorder, excessive worrying, OCD, social anxiety), assessment of ADHD among older adolescent and adults, couples counseling, adolescent therapy, and I am intensively trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy.
You or your adolescent may be experiencing anxiety, depression, emotional sensitivity, relationship issues or difficulty focusing. I have extensive experience as a doctoral-level cognitive behavioral therapist and I believe helping individuals understand how their thoughts and behaviors contribute to intense emotions is key to mental health. Challenging unhealthy thinking and learning how to think differently can be very effective. I teach specific and diverse skills and coach people on using them in real-life situations. I often share behavioral management techniques to help clients gain control over repetitive or compulsive actions and reduce anxiety in feared situations.

You find yourself at a crossroads, frustrated by the present state of things but unsure of the future. The challenge of daily stressors impacting your ability to concentrate, causing irritability, and lowered patience has brought you to this point of no return. You're resilient, but tired of having to go at it alone and are ready for better tools, guidance, and an advocate to help you along the way. Things have to change, but you need help with prioritizing yourself, setting healthy boundaries, and finding a healthy balance. The most challenging step is the first one, and you’ve taken it just by looking for the help you need.

I bring a variety of work and life experiences to my counseling of individuals, couples, adolescents and families regarding issues of grief, trauma, anger management, life transitions, and management of stress, anxiety and depression.
Meeting with a counselor requires a lot of courage, so I have great respect for anyone who wants to start that journey. I will provide a non-judgmental space for you to identify your areas of concern and ultimately what you hope to change. Our goal is to build awareness together, so that you can make different choices instead of automatically doing the same things that no longer support you. We will work together to help you pay greater attention to your mind and body processes (i.e., a holistic approach) to facilitate a deeper connection with yourself and others.

Anxiety and depression are the most common issues bringing clients to therapy, followed by relationship issues. Relationships, in the past or present, are often at the core of how we see ourselves and the world. Healing negative messages from childhood will often help release current depression and anxiety, or at least improve it. I have a special focus of couples counseling. It is so difficult to find yourself at odds with the person you once felt so safe and at peace with. Let me help you find that secure place again.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
