Maya Angelou captured the experience of life precisely when she said, "Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better". If you're visiting this site, you're likely hoping to find someone who can help you feel, think and/or do better in some way. When people are managing symptoms of anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, difficult relationships, chronic pain, grief or various other challenging life circumstances it can be hard to think, feel or do better.

Sometimes we experience so many conflicting feelings at once that it is difficult for us to put into words what we are truly experiencing. I just want to let you know, that's okay. As a counselor, I strive to provide a safe, non-judgmental and validating space for all of my clients to explore each stressor that might be causing this discomfort. If you feel ready to explore this with a therapist, send me and email or give me a call and we can chat about what therapy might look like for you. I am a LGBTQIA+ affirming, body positive, trauma informed, socially conscious, and anti-racist/anti-oppressive oriented therapist.

Grand Being! It is my hope to help you discover your pathway to success...however, you choose to define success. I am a staunch believer that, with the proper assistance, there is nothing that can not be overcome and conquered. I have proven this to myself and my clients time and time again through my work with incarcerates, SPMI, and children/adolescents. If you are seeking to become the best version of yourself and need someone who will help you to discover those elements, please contact me.

Life is difficult when you are stuck in the past. I would like to help you remove barriers that prevent you from living the life you desire and deserve. This includes processing past memories and negative beliefs about yourself that get in the way of feeling connected to yourself and others. I work with you to build a solid sense of who you are and investigate ways you feel empowered in your body. We also work on discovering what radical self care and coping skills look like for you and ultimately determine how you can have a life that is centered around what you truly value. And most importantly, increasing experiences of pleasure!

Let’s be real. Life is hard. You may feel stuck repeating the same patterns in your life, exhausted from fighting the negative stories your mind tells you, overwhelmed from constant stress, or weighed down by the past no matter how hard you try to let go. You desire to build self-compassion, live with intention, regulate your nervous system, and feel securely attached in your relationships. Therapy can help you deepen the relationship you have with yourself and others, process complex emotions, learn skills to manage stress, and heal from the wounds that once harmed you.

Having had experienced many losses in my life, I often wonder what to do next or how to move forward. Sometimes life happens so quickly that it seems like there is not enough time to catch a breath. It's a scary feeling to have to figure out the hustle and bustle of life while still hurting inside. Fearful of being misunderstood, judged or like "it" may not work may be the negative thoughts that have developed during such a devastating loss.

I work well with clients whom are seeking to improve their quality of life. If there’s ever a moment where one maybe feeling a void, emptiness inside of them I assist and facilitate clients through rediscovery of self. The concept of being fully aware of oneself and how you see the world is crucial to identifying and upholding your personal values and standards. It’s when we neglect our standards of living do we find conflict or that internal battle. Most of the time this happens when a life stressor occurs. My ideal client is one whom is ready to move from victim to survivor.

Life is a journey and no one should travel it alone. Our journey brings many joys and trials. As humans, we are created for relationships and community. Many of us find ourselves, at times, feeling alone or misunderstood. It is during these moments that we feel hopeless, isolated, and that no one could possibly understand what we are going through or feeling. Please know that you are not alone and there is HOPE! People bring us to hurt and people bring us to healing. It is my life passion to bring others to HOPE and lifelong healing.

Black and African American Therapists

As an African American, why might I wish to see a therapist who is African American?

African American clients may seek out African American therapists for several reasons, foremost being a sense of cultural understanding and the possibility of shared experiences. Cultural sensitivity and context on the part of the therapist may make it easier to form a therapeutic alliance and to focus on the work of therapy without the need to explain or educate a therapist on cultural matters. It may also be empowering to work with a therapist who shares one’s racial or ethnic background. It is important to note that a therapist who demonstrates cultural sensitivity can be highly effective even if they do not share a client’s background or race.

Can clients benefit from working with a therapist who shares their race or ethnicity?

Yes, having a therapist who shares a client’s race or ethnicity is often valuable, especially if it fosters a strong therapeutic alliance between the two. While training, qualifications, and experience are always important, a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic effectiveness. An alliance is likely to be strengthened with a therapist who has an understanding of a client’s background and perhaps also shared life experiences. It should be noted that many clients form a strong bond with their therapist regardless of their race or ethnicity. This is a personal decision, and it depends on the therapist, the client, and the connection between the two.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with African American clients?

Clients can ask therapists directly about their experience working with clients of diverse backgrounds, including with African American individuals. You may wish to inquire whether a therapist has undertaken training in cultural competence broadly, and how specifically they would ensure that their approach is sensitive to the needs of African American clients. Therapy involves honesty and trust, so it’s best for clients to share concerns about their therapist’s cultural competence at the outset. And a good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals based on the concerns you articulate.

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

It’s important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive because everyone comes to therapy with a unique background and set of experiences. Being aware of culture and cultural differences between people is important for understanding clients, as is coming to therapy with an open mind, recognizing that the therapist doesn’t necessarily understand everything and that the client can help guide the way.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Black therapists?

The directory of Black therapists includes therapists who have self-identified their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profile, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. In situations where the number of therapists who have identified as Black is limited, the directory will also show therapists who have undergone specific multicultural training or have extensive experience working with clients from relevant cultural backgrounds.
