Life can be pretty stressful these days, and it can be difficult to find HOPE. Are you experiencing frustration handling life challenges, managing a relationship, or coping with a health issue? Psychotherapy is a powerful tool to combat these hardships. I apply a variety of approaches to assist clients in understanding themselves, coping with their difficulties, and achieving their goals for a HOPEFUL future. As the therapeutic process promotes awareness, obstacles are understood. Gaining insight leads the way to learning new coping strategies and a more gratifying life becomes possible.

A major challenge for many individuals, couples, and families is creating and sustaining meaningful connections. Feeling connected to loved ones and friends, purposeful work, or creative endeavors is not easy. Sometimes people do not feel connected to themselves and need support in understanding their feelings and behaviors. Likewise, there are times when disconnecting from toxic relationships and activities is necessary and requires strategies and skills that are not easily acquired or encouraged by others. Stressful life transitions, traumatic events, addictive behaviors, and painful losses are concerns for many of my clients.

I have many years of experience working with individuals who struggle with mental health and addiction problems. I use a skill-based approach to treatment called dialectical behavioral therapy. This type of treatment focuses on learning how to live in the moment, manage interpersonal relationships effectively, handle life's challenges with grace and competence, and understand and deal with feelings in constructive ways. Using my training and diagnostic knowledge I will develop a comprehensive treatment plan that emphasizes relapse prevention and living a life worth living. I work with a team of other mental health professionals including psychiatrists, and counselors.

I view therapy as a collaborative process where you can tell your story, explore your feelings, increase insight, and build self-awareness. I see therapy as an opportunity for growth and reflection. Drawing on over two decades of experience my approach is sensitive, patient and accepting. I feel that my role is to be a compassionate guide and facilitator to help you learn about yourself. Therapy can be like sanctuary - a place where there are no distractions, where there is an opportunity to pay attention to what is important.

Most of my patients come to me feeling a significant level of distress. Some may have seen a mental health professional before and have some idea of what to expect. However, for many this may be the first time they have ever met with a mental health professional and they may feel apprehensive about the process. My goal in that initial session is to strike a balance between putting the person at ease while gathering important information about who they are and what their situation is. Most patients return to their second session feeling encouraged and a degree of hope based on that initial encounter.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
