My name is Nicole Byrum, and I am an independently licensed marriage and family therapist with 16 years of clinical experience. I have worked with a variety of clientele, and much of my work has been with those facing Anxiety, Coping Skills, Depression, Relationship Issues, and Substance Use. I often use a mix of Christian Counseling, Cognitive Behavioral (CBT), Solution Focused Brief (SFBT), Dialectical (DBT), and many more. I believe it is the client's job to determine the goals for therapy, but I will come alongside them to help determine the objectives connected to that goal.

I have additional certification in treating Trauma related disorders using EMDR, Tics/Tourette's Disorders using The Tourette's Association of America endorsed CBIT, and Substance Use Disorders as I am also licensed as an LICDC-CS in the State of Ohio.
We've all heard the saying "things happen for a reason" and "you wouldn't be who you are today if that didn't happen". While there may be some truth to those, that doesn't mean we have to let them define us. It is easy to feel like you are stuck in a cycle that you cant seem to break out of. A cycle of substance usage, anger, fear, avoidant behavior, unhealthy relationships etc. You don't have to surrender, you have the ability to take control of your life for a better future. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression, addiction, or a past trauma, I can help you navigate through your mental health journey.

I have demonstrated positive outcomes with anxiety, depression, trauma, identity, and addictions.
Life can be a challenge, both positive and negative. At times we may not know how to help ourselves become unstuck or how to work through life and asking for help can be difficult. As human beings, we are designed to make connections with others through shared experiences but a great appreciation of our differences. I use a strengths-based, person-centered approach. I have worked with clients from all walks of life and in various settings and hope to work with you soon.

This allows treatment, growth, and support to be possible for an array of issues; personal trauma, infidelity- current or past, or addiction on the account of your partner.
Relationships are unavoidable and make the world go round, but when they go wrong it can feel devastating. The relationship we have with ourselves is considered the most important, as we must be in a healthy place to interact and successfully bond with others. Often times past trauma can be exacerbated or triggered by our relationships with others- whether unintentional or due to the relationship itself consisting of abusive or unhealthy facets. It is imperative to work to resolve any trauma, so that it doesn't continue to dampen your happiness and quality of relationship with yourself and others.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
