For even more specialized circumstances involving trauma, I am trained in EMDR.
Most of us have been there: spinning our wheels trying to outrun our past, struggling to get out of bed and make it through the day, internally crippling under the weight of just so many thoughts and expectations, struggling to just feel like yourself from one day to the next. If you’re tired of fighting these battles alone, I want to help. As a mental health therapist, my goal is to help clients overcome trauma, depression, anxiety, and mood disorders.

I am trained in EMDR therapy and am certified in trauma-informed yoga.
Trauma symptoms can take many forms: a low hum of depression or depression that keeps you in bed for days, crippling anxiety, self-doubt, constant negative thinking, substance abuse, dysfunctional family relationships... or just a feeling of "lost", "hopeless", "stuck" or "worthless". The truth is that we are subject to trauma just by experiencing life that we weren't prepared for, and it can look like a lot of things: a change of jobs...a death in the family...COVID, or serious abuse. If you're looking for an alternative, holistic approach to healing trauma, please reach out.

I also incorporate other modalities, such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.
I understand the exhaustion and hopelessness. The gut-punching anxiety that hits out of the blue. I know what it is like to feel lost and trapped at the same time. I decided to become a therapist after a successful academic career as a philosophy professor. I made the career change after facing and overcoming my own mental health challenges with the help of a therapist. The experience was so liberating that I wanted to share it with others.

I have specialized training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing ( EMDR), Internal Family Systems Theory (IFS), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Brainspotting.
Updated 11/09/24: I am accepting new clients who are seeking a supportive, safe space which embraces a systems perspective. As a clinical social worker, I wholeheartedly believe that mental health care is inadequate if it does not acknowledge the impact of the social, political, and economic systems with which we interact—and are affected by—every single day. Self-care was seen as a political act during the civil rights movement. Activists understood the need to care for their well-being so that they could continue to show up and advocate for change to the established, broken systems. Today, we must continue to do the same.

EMDR Therapists

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
