I utilize a variety of modalities and interventions in my treatment plans, including (but not limited to) bibliotherapy, clinical worksheets, mindfulness activities, psychoeducation, mental health podcasts and art-therapy inspired techniques.
People usually come to me when they are in a high-emotions season of life. Often, this looks like changes in your relationships or career, grief and loss, or unexpected transition periods in your life. In this age of uncertainty, it’s especially true that high levels of emotional volatility can happen at any time. Regardless of your circumstances, it helps tremendously to have a dedicated time and space to vent and process those feelings with an unbiased professional. I offer a safe and open-minded environment, so you feel welcome and comfortable.

I provide a tailored, flexible treatment approach utilizing CBT, DBT, ACT, mindfulness, and client-centered perspectives.
You are the expert in your own life and struggles. However, we all lose our way sometimes and can forget the unique strengths we all posses. Therapy can be a useful tool to help rediscover our strengths, regain balance in our lives, take control of the issues that are causing distress, and set new goals for the future. My approach is action-oriented; together we will re-orient you to your values and goals, while also seeking to understand and heal the past and what brought you to therapy. I also believe self-compassion is key; learning to forgive yourself, and accept yourself and where you are in the present moment.

The essence of therapy is meeting the person where they are, without judgement or preconceived ideas. When troubled by depression, personal, family or job related issues, finding someone that provides mental health care is an important first step. Many people are hesitant to enter therapy and often struggle with their problems on their own for a period of time, sometimes for months or even years, before seeking help. Although difficult, it is important to take the time necessary to find a therapist who can best meet your needs. Call today to take that first step to enhanced mental health.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
