Life changes like divorce, loss, health problem, and retirement can be difficult and cause additional stress.
I enjoy working with those in helping professions like healthcare, education, law enforcement, and social work. Many are called to this work because they are empathetic and find it meaningful and fulfilling. Sometimes we spend so much time and energy caring for the needs of others that we fail to make time for our own self care and opportunities for wellness. I offer supportive therapy tailored to help people utilize their unique qualities and skills to bring comfort, healing and equanimity to their own lives.

I also enjoy working with couples regarding effective communication, co-parenting, blending families, infidelity or divorce.
The simple fact that we are all human beings means that we will experience the joy and pain that comes with being alive and living life. Most clients tend to seek a therapist while they are going through a difficult transition that often feels painful and sometimes lonely. As a therapist, I have learned that individuals tend to learn more about themselves, and experience more personal growth during these periods of transitions. Therefore, my favorite role as a therapist is to build a collaborative, supportive relationship with individuals that may be struggling with making decisions or adjusting to changes related to natural life transitions.

Are you 13 to 23, or the parent of someone 13 to 23? Experiencing behavioral issues at home or at school? Recently encouraged to complete assessment by the schools or courts? Want to address and reduce/eliminate drug use such as alcohol or marijuana? Adolescence can be a time of struggle for everyone involved. Teenagers desire connections with others where they believe their voice is valued, built on acceptance and mutual respect as a unique individual. It’s important to understand the thought process and any potential underlying issues that may be contributing to individual behaviors in an open and non-judgmental environment.

I am a counselor and a Veteran of the United States Coast Guard. This has lent me a unique therapeutic style: balancing respect and discipline with warmth and flexibility. It is my belief and confidence that each and every person is capable of making choices and decisions that are right for them, especially in regard to their culture, race, ethnicity, disability, and/or identity. In my experience, I have found that the most successful clients are the ones who have a desire for change, and are motivated to work for it and ask for help when needed. My hope is that my clients feel empowered throughout therapy.

I love to help couples and relationships find their connection. You might feel there is a pattern to your fights. You argue about the same things and are both left feeling alone and not important to your person. We will explore how to identify and ask for what you want in a way that feels less threatening to the relationship. Let's rebuild the intimacy and closeness that you need to feel fulfilled. Working on communication by expressing our emotions and needs, slowing down the cycle and developing new experiences can bring about lasting connection.

Life can be hard. I work with clients facing stress, adversity, loss of a loved one, confusion within a relationship, anger, communication breakdown or betrayal within a marriage, strains from the reality of parenting, confusion of life as a teen, feeling lost, facing divorce, balancing co-parenting, or "just" figuring out our place in the world. Gracious- we face a lot! Brene Brown has a wonderful quote that says "loving ourselves through the process of owning our stories is the bravest thing we will ever do." I agree but find that often, we aren't quite sure how to love ourselves. How do we own our story?

It’s amazing how different life can look when we shift our focus. A fresh perspective and a change of perception can go a long way for old habits and patterns of thinking. Renewing our minds is transformative! Whether this a tough season for you or you feel like you’ve been in the wilderness all of your life, change can happen. Truth be told, counseling is hard work. Showing up for yourself is hard and confronting areas you need to change is hard. Staying the same is hard…to all of that, we do our best to "choose our hard"! You don't have to do this alone! Relationship concerns? Anxiety? Depression? Divorce, etc? All of the above?

Divorce Therapists

How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?

Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.

What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?

There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioral, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.

When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?

When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.

How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
