It has been my privilege to help people develop lives that are deeply meaningful and emotionally satisfying. Psychotherapy is not a set of tricks or techniques. Rather, it is a personal relationship that affects people on a number of levels. Most of my clients come away from the process with some new practical skills and new, more adaptive ways of looking at life. They also hone their capacities to look at themselves, with more insight and greater self-understanding.
Particularly rewarding for me has been my work with families, assisting them in healing from the wounds and fractures of divorce.

When I entered the counseling profession over twenty-five years ago, my desire was to help people adjust to some of life's challenges and setbacks, while finding meaning and purpose. The therapeutic relationship is a safe venue in which one’s goals, whether life coaching, healing and recovery, improving relationships, or enhancing life satisfaction can be realized. My excitement for assisting people to develop meaningful goals for fulfillment in their life situation remains a passion. I work with children, adolescents, adults of all ages, and families to improve the quality of their lives.

It is my belief that every person possesses the potential to heal and grow. Despite this potential, we all face adversity and challenges in life, and we sometimes need help overcoming these challenges - that's what therapy is for. Together, we can work to identify stressors and challenges that you face, and match them with a treatment that meets your needs.

After having spent several years working in community mental health and residential treatment, I have worked with a wide range of issues. I'm comfortable with helping individuals, couples, and families who have felt like others have not been willing to help them. My ideal client(s) would be the person, family, or couple who thinks, "My problems would be too much for someone else," or someone who has felt mental health professionals let them down in the past. I'd like to work with you because I think we can find a way to make life better.

You feel trapped in a loop—thoughts racing, emotions spiraling, sensations overwhelming—unable to break free. Caught between the pressures of a disaffirming world and the discomfort of your own pain, uncertainty, and fear, you long for a space where your neurodiversity or LGBTQ+ identity is not just understood but celebrated, where you can explore the hard stuff without judgment. Your goal is to learn how to sit with discomfort, embrace uncertainty, and heal from the burdens of oppression. You want to move through life authentically, with more compassion for yourself and less fear of your emotions.

The environment I strive to create in counseling is one of unconditional acceptance, authenticity, and compassion. My approach to counseling comes from the Existential school of thought. Together and without judgment we can explore difficult topics like the feeling of meaninglessness of existence, the impermanence of all, and the anxiety that comes from our freedom to be the authors of our lives. The journey to find meaning and purpose in life can at times feel isolating, however you do not have to walk down that road alone.

Male Therapists
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
