In counseling I use Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Trauma-informed therapy, and canine therapy.
Do you feel like your past is always causing you to fail in the present? Do you want to get better? And are you sick of just talking about the problems without solutions or change? I work with individuals to help them find hope again when they feel all hope has been lost. Together, we can identify your barriers to reaching your goals and tackle them head on. We will use a wholistic approach to address the mind, body, and spirit. I use a Biblical approach for addressing issues while also using mindfulness and trauma therapy. My work is primarily Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, teaching coping strategies and using meditation and mindfulness, though I incorporate play therapy, art therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy into my work.
Do you feel that one of the most important aspects of counseling is relationship building and establishing trust? I like to meet my clients where they are and help them to grow from there. Counseling is a safe place to be vulnerable, express feelings of fear or sadness, and a place to plant seeds of hope and develop self-efficacy and peace. Counseling can involve a great deal of self-reflection and I also like to work from a goal and solution focused approach. I am a Licensed Independent Social Worker Supervisor with a master’s degree from Case Western Reserve University.

Hi there, welcome to my profile! I have been working with adults with mental health and substance abuse issues for nearly 5 years. Prior to this, I served as a counselor to children with developmental disabilities and their families. My approach with clients is very empathetic and client centered. I think of myself as a guide who provides a safe and affirmative space for people to explore feelings and thoughts they might otherwise not reveal or share with others. In this way, I believe that the client-therapist relationship can create a launching point to help clients create the changes they want in their lives.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
