CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) is the most common one amongst therapist as it helps an individual to challenge thoughts and emotions that may lead to undesirable behaviors.

I have worked with clients with a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, relationship issues, parenting problems, career challenges. I use a variety of therapy techniques including motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, rational emotive therapy, gestalt, and psychodynamic primarily.
I’ve been a therapist since 2002 (that’s over 20 years, yikes!) working primarily with adult substance users and adolescents. I have a PhD in Counseling Psychology and masters in social work, I’m a Licensed Independent Social Worker and Licensed Independent Chemical Dependence Counselor. More recently my focus has been with adolescent substance users with mental health concerns. Sometimes I talk with parents about how to set boundaries and reinforce appropriate behavior with consequences. I also like to help anyone find solutions to their problems, manage difficult feelings, and reach their goals.

The main modality I use is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
Are you waking up in the middle of the night worrying? Do you think of the worst case scenario and all of the "what ifs"? Do you find yourself feeling discontent with the relationships in your life? Do you have a difficult time communcating your needs and end up feeling frustrated, anxious, sad, or unfullfilled? If you are tired of living this way and want things to change then it might be time to reach out for some support. It can be difficult to navigate life when you are not feeling like yourself or at your best.

I use a Cognitive Behavioral approach to therapy (I am actually board-certified in CBT) and often use components of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy as well both of these approaches have great empirical support and I base my work on the latest research in the field.
I received my Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina and have worked with adults of all ages. I help people from various backgrounds and life circumstances build a robust toolbox for coping with life's challenges. I view mental wellness as a skill, and I have lots of experience teaching others to overcome adversity and the emotional ups and downs that are a natural part of life.

I find that I do my best work when Internal Family Systems (IFS) is the primary modality being used and techniques from CBT, EMDR and Mindfulness are being used to support the healing/growing process.
Taking the step to engage in therapy takes courage. It shows that you value yourself and your relationships enough to heal and improve your way of being in the world. I work with clients every week who are wanting to live into the best version of themselves. I see them putting in the work, healing and transforming. I meet clients where they are at. We can work as slowly or as intensively as you would like. I place great emphasis on clients feeling safe within the context of our relationship.

My work is primarily Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, teaching coping strategies and using meditation and mindfulness, though I incorporate play therapy, art therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy into my work.
Do you feel that one of the most important aspects of counseling is relationship building and establishing trust? I like to meet my clients where they are and help them to grow from there. Counseling is a safe place to be vulnerable, express feelings of fear or sadness, and a place to plant seeds of hope and develop self-efficacy and peace. Counseling can involve a great deal of self-reflection and I also like to work from a goal and solution focused approach. I am a Licensed Independent Social Worker Supervisor with a master’s degree from Case Western Reserve University.

I earned my certificate in Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) several years ago.
The loss of a loved one is one of the most difficult challenges we face in life. Life can feel hopeless and meaningless when in the depths of grief. Understanding that everyone grieves differently and in their own time is essential to healing. Thru my own personal story of caregiving and loss, I have developed a heart for helping others who are grieving. I would like to hear your story and help guide you in your healing journey.

Kristen is a master's level therapist with an advanced degree in social work (LISW-S). She has been practicing for almost 12 years. Kristen prefers to work with each individual person to determine the best direction for therapy, based on their unique needs. She utilizes techniques associated with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), in combination with Motivational Interviewing and Solution Focused methods. Everyone has different needs, and there is no "one size fits all" therapeutic technique! Her main focus is finding the strengths a person already possesses, and helping them use this strength to tackle the issues at hand.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) Therapists

How does cognitive behavioral therapy work?

Cognitive behavioral therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario catastrophizing or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioral therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioral therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
