I specialize in confronting irrational thinking and maladaptive belief systems that are major influences on identity, personality, relationship development, and emotional management.
There is a reason for everything, and my place is in the service of others, to educate, encourage, and support. I have always had an open-door policy to those seeking help. I live by two rules: honor your word and treat others how you would like to be treated. I am willing to assist anyone who seeks help. My primary focus has been on helping the African American community deal with issues of identity, personality, relationship development, and emotional management.

I have many years of experience working with individuals who struggle with mental health and addiction problems. I use a skill-based approach to treatment called dialectical behavioral therapy. This type of treatment focuses on learning how to live in the moment, manage interpersonal relationships effectively, handle life's challenges with grace and competence, and understand and deal with feelings in constructive ways. Using my training and diagnostic knowledge I will develop a comprehensive treatment plan that emphasizes relapse prevention and living a life worth living. I work with a team of other mental health professionals including psychiatrists, and counselors.

Many of my clients start as individuals, but share the gift of healing and power with their families who are encouraged to come in as well.
I have been where you are. Suffering is a right of passage. The idea of sharing your thoughts and feelings with a stranger may seem odd at first, but when the therapeutic relationship is working, fear and pain become manageable and sometimes even fall away. Having problems can feel lonely and alienating, you deserve the opportunity to find an easier way. EXHALE…it will be ok:-) I have a relaxed approach with humor and an easy disposition. Unfortunately seeking help can be a burden in itself. Let’s talk for a session or 2 and see if there’s some resonance. Adolescents, Adults, Couples and Families, (thoughtful, high functioning).

Welcome! I am excited that you have come to my page. I am here to offer you a safe and nonjudgmental environment so that we may work through any challenges that you may be facing. Trauma, broken relationships, career/lifestyle, anxiety, depression, parenting, maternal/paternal issues, marriage/couples problems-these things happen to even the strongest people and sometimes you just need someone to "hear" you. Learning how to cope with life's challenges will decrease feelings of hopelessness and sadness. Releasing negative thoughts will allow you to leave feeling "lighter" and replace them with positive thoughts and goals.

It is a courageous thing to ask for help, and for many of us it can be terrifying to acknowledge our own needs.
Current Openings - Wednesdays at 8am and 9am, Thursdays at 8am, and Fridays at 12:30pm PST. - - The world can be a confusing and painful place, and we all need places of safety where we can make sense of ourselves and the things we're going through. My hope is that therapy can offer a space where you will feel seen, receive support, and gain insight into the things you've already been through and everything you're experiencing today. It can be easy to put our own needs aside when other things feel more urgent, and I want to create a space where you and your needs get to be a consistent priority.

I believe we all have the innate capacity for growth and change, and sometimes we need help to do so. Entering therapy is a significant step, and I am honored to work with people who have decided to begin their path toward healing. I work with adults, teenagers, and couples who are dealing with trauma, relationship issues, depression, anxiety, grief, eating disorders, and developmental crises. Using a strengths-based approach, together we will explore difficult thoughts, emotions, and behaviors from a non-judgmental perspective and chart new fulfilling paths.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
