I am a person-centered and relational therapist, and incorporate modalities such as mindfulness, acupressure, CBT, the Gottman Method, and Attachment Theory.
With over 12 years of experience in the field, I specialize in helping college students, young adults, and couples who are struggling with relationship issues, life transitions, and self-esteem. I specialize in working with individuals experiencing grief and anxiety. Grief can be a complex and challenging process, and I provide a supportive and nurturing space for clients to explore their emotions, find meaning in their loss, and gradually heal. Anxiety is another area of expertise, and I assist individuals in understanding the underlying causes of their anxiety and developing practical tools to manage and reduce its impact on their daily lives. I provide a nonjudgmental and safe environment where clients can explore their fears, develop self-compassion, and cultivate resilience.

Difficulties in our lives can interfere with our happiness, perhaps leaving us feeling stuck, anxious, depressed or angry. We want our lives to be better. Fortunately, the human spirit is resilient. This often is when we can heal, reconnect, and move forward in our life. My practice is built on the belief in our power to move from pain, change, to growth and joy. I have seen this in my life and my clients. I find success and purpose in this work. If you want to reach a better place, I have a gift for helping people achieve this, and would like to help you.

You probably don't know exactly when or how it happened, but the person next to you feels like a stranger. Maybe it started when the children came along, or maybe you're just now understanding that you weren't quite as compatible as you thought. You fight over the tiniest things, & it can get ugly so quickly; or you live in frozen silence, with invisible walls between you that sometimes seem impossible to get past. It feels like you barely touch or kiss, much less make love. Maybe one of you is thinking of, or actually having, an affair. How did it come to this? And where do you go now? It can all feel so hopeless and overwhelming.

You may be experiencing anxiety, depression, emotional sensitivity, relationship issues or difficulty focusing. I have extensive experience as a doctoral-level cognitive behavioral therapist and I believe helping individuals understand how their thoughts and behaviors contribute to intense emotions is key to mental health. Challenging unhealthy thinking and learning how to think differently can be very effective. I teach specific and diverse skills and coach people on using them in real-life situations. I often share behavioral management techniques to help clients gain control over repetitive or compulsive actions and reduce anxiety in feared situations.

More Than Boundaries Support Group...You’ve read the book(s) on boundaries; you know you need to set and keep better boundaries in your personal life, but HOW? How can you grow from just talking about boundaries to implementing healthy boundaries that don’t get all squishy when pressure is applied? I’m Kathy Sprinkle, a certified Developmental and Relational Trauma Therapist from Counseling Alliance in Cincinnati, Ohio. Starting Monday, June 26th, I will be moderating an online support group, especially but not exclusively, for women who have been betrayed.

Gottman Method Therapists

How does the Gottman method work?

One of the core doctrines of the Gottman method is that negative emotions hurt relationships about five times more than positive emotions help them. Thus, couples require five times more positive interactions than negative interactions with each other. The therapist will guide clients on how to improve communication and understanding of each other to manage conflict and have their emotional needs met. The therapist will also advise couples on how to repair relations with each other when conflict arises, and therefore avoid lasting damage.

Is the Gottman method evidence-based?

Yes, this method is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy. The method is based on more than 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the psychologists who developed the method. The Gottmans analyzed decades of data to draw conclusions about what types of interactions are likely to lead to specific results, and which interventions are most likely to lead to success. Studies have found that this approach leads to improvements in relationship satisfaction, intimacy, communication skills, and a lower rate of divorce.

How long does the Gottman method take?

The duration of treatment depends on the specific challenges clients face. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, and an average course of treatment is around 10 sessions. In some cases, such as for couples dealing with a critical problem, the therapist will suggest an intensive course of treatment, with daily sessions over the first two to four days. Treatment is complete when the couple is satisfied and has met the goals they’ve set, and when the therapist believes they have the skills to continue on their own.

Is the Gottman method effective?

Through the Gottman method, couples can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. This treatment has been used for more than 40 years; the method is supported by empirical research, including randomized controlled trials that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relationship outcomes for couples. Like any talk therapy, success or failure depends in large part on how committed the clients are to making positive changes and working toward results.
