“People may be complicated, but therapy doesn’t have to be.” This is a motto I developed after recognizing that people respond best when the message and the skill set are straightforward and commonsensical. What I bring to the therapeutic table is a wealth of experience caring for the body and the mind with all it’s complexities and frailties. A tired body reflects a tired mind and vice versa. I work to help you achieve balance, regulation and increased strength to manage all areas of your life. The results for you are healthier relationships, increased endurance to navigate present difficulties and sustaining resilience.

I am skilled at helping clients with various challenges, but I consider my expertise to be helping people who are dealing with anxiety, depression, caregivers for others, healthcare workers, people dealing with chronic illness, and people going through life transitions.
Are you feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or just not feeling like you’re firing on all cylinders? Maybe you're feeling burnt out from life or work. Life throws heavy stuff at us, and sometimes, we need a partner to figure it out. That’s where I come in; I’m just a real person helping other real people. The idea of talking to a therapist can be scary- maybe you’re not ready to share your whole story, and that’s okay. My job is to help you figure out what you want to work on and go from there. I believe therapy is a safe place where we can come up with solutions to some of the challenges you may be experiencing.

I understand the realities of receiving a devastating diagnosis, coping with difficult medical treatments and living with chronic illness.
Life is a series of transitions. Even growth and positive changes require new skill sets and can be challenging to navigate. The process of counseling allows us to gain clarity about ourselves and our situation. It can be profoundly therapeutic to speak to someone who knows how to listen. The gains and insights achieved can be thrilling, but the process itself is hard work. I have been a Clinical Social Worker for 40 years in many settings. I have learned the nuts and bolts of chemical dependency, treatment resources and the path to acceptance of a mental health diagnosis.

I enjoy assisting with a variety of problems that emerge throughout the lifespan, especially adolescents and young adults struggling with anxiety, depression, perfectionism, and chronic illness.
Sometimes, things fall apart seemingly all at once. A relationship ends, a job is lost. You are diagnosed with a health problem or sustain a debilitating injury. Other times, things gradually build to feel like you are being slowly buried alive. You have trouble falling asleep because you dread waking up the next day. You are no longer enjoying life, seeing it as a series of obstacles to “get through”. Detached, hollowed out, energetically drained, and wondering how many more days you can live like this. If you are feeling stuck, ready for a change and greater clarity, I will dedicate myself to your cause.

I specialize in holistic and neurodivergent and LGBTQIA affirming counseling as well as counseling for chronic illness, pain, and trauma.
When you are neurodivergent, it can feel like you never quite 'fit'. It can feel lonely and isolating. Neurodiversity affirming counseling can help you find your place in the world and embrace your unique gifts and strengths. It can also help you to deal with the past, which may mean coming to terms with years of feeling misunderstood.

As a practitioner who is neurodivergent, struggles with chronic illness, and is uniquely Appalachian, I welcome and value the unique intersectionalities that every person brings to parenthood.
Are you struggling as a parent due to previous traumatic experiences? Maybe you're reminded of the trauma you endured conceiving/in pregnancy/during birth, your own traumatic experiences as an infant or toddler, reminded of the poor relationships you had or have with your primary caregivers, or the traumatic experiences you've endured in the healthcare system because of your own physical health, mental health, or because of your unique family. You're looking for a psychotherapist who "gets it," with lived experience of the stress that parenting can bring, and is truly trauma-informed.

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
