I specialize in working with those who wish to improve relationships, who are recovering from loss, who are in psychological pain, who may be caring for a family member, or who are trying to cope with change and transition in their life cycle.
Psychotherapy is not only about relieving mental distress. It is also about increasing resilience, wholeness, wellness, and improving relationships. I believe the therapist's job is to offer a safe place for healing - a place where an individual, couple, or family can be listened to with skill and respect. In the process of establishing a safe relationship and setting realistic goals, people grow and change according to their abilities. People are the "experts" of their own lives. I believe in the interdependence of the generations in families and in the human community.

I work with adults processing a variety of issues including trauma, grief, relationships, complicated life transitions, depression, anxiety, and more. We can tend to feel “stuck” during difficult periods of our lives, or even start to form negative beliefs about ourselves as a result of trauma. Thoughts such as “I’m not good enough”, “something is wrong with me”, or “I’m permanently damaged”, “I can’t trust myself or others” etc.

I've had 30 years of experience in helping others who struggle with anxiety, depression, Bipolar, premarital and marital issues, pregnancy and postpartum depression, grief and loss, chronic or life threatening illnesses, relationship and blended family issues, career counseling, divorce recovery as well as trauma and post traumatic stress.
Like so many of us, life has had some unexpected twists and turns. Whether you are grieving, sensing a growing distance with your spouse, having trouble taking care of your family, struggling to form meaningful relationships, recovering from a divorce or break up, unsure how to help your adult children, experiencing mood swings, struggling with work or school, relocating, struggling with pregnancy or learning that being a mom or dad is a lot harder than you imagined, I can help you feel less overwhelmed and more fulfilled. My goal is to help you feel better by providing direct, honest, respectful, and supportive feedback.

I specialize in grief, loss, trauma, & anxiety.
In the face of life's hardships, it's normal to feel frozen sometimes, unsure of where to even begin to heal. Big emotions like grief or anxiety flare up in the wake of loss, unexpected life events, or simply build up over time. We might find ourselves stuck in patterns or beliefs that are no longer serving us. It can be daunting to dig in at first, but you can find your equilibrium again. Together, we will work on strategies that help you contain pain and make space for joy. You can find a path through your stuck points and live a life more in line with your chosen values and goals.

I am passionate about working with individuals as they face significant life transitions such as educational and career changes, relocation, marriage, pregnancy, birth, parenthood, second career, divorce, coparenting, aging, grief, loss and end-of-life concerns.
Many of us come to counseling because we are struggling with feelings of overwhelm, perfectionism, burnout, lack of motivation, relationship issues, feelings of inadequacy, self-defeating behavior, or negative self-talk. I enjoy working collaboratively with clients to identify and reduce negative thoughts and behaviors, build on strengths, and clarify personal values and goals. I encourage clients to weave meaningful connections between the past and the present as a pathway to positive change in the future.

I have experience in adoption, chronic and terminal illness and grief.
I have been a psychotherapist for over 25 years. I provide a nurturing environment where we can safely explore difficult issues. I have a highly interactive approach and believe that the best results come from a strong therapeutic relationship. Many of the people I work with are the "walking wounded" - 'regular folks' feeling that they are not dealing well with the stresses of everyday life. Other people I work with have a history of chronic mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, and bi-polar disorder.

I bring a variety of work and life experiences to my counseling of individuals, couples, adolescents and families regarding issues of grief, trauma, anger management, life transitions, and management of stress, anxiety and depression.
Meeting with a counselor requires a lot of courage, so I have great respect for anyone who wants to start that journey. I will provide a non-judgmental space for you to identify your areas of concern and ultimately what you hope to change. Our goal is to build awareness together, so that you can make different choices instead of automatically doing the same things that no longer support you. We will work together to help you pay greater attention to your mind and body processes (i.e., a holistic approach) to facilitate a deeper connection with yourself and others.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
