Most of my patients come to me feeling a significant level of distress. Some may have seen a mental health professional before and have some idea of what to expect. However, for many this may be the first time they have ever met with a mental health professional and they may feel apprehensive about the process. My goal in that initial session is to strike a balance between putting the person at ease while gathering important information about who they are and what their situation is. Most patients return to their second session feeling encouraged and a degree of hope based on that initial encounter.

Alice Scesny Palmer served as director of the Cleveland Clinic Department of Social Work for more than 20 years. She supervised more than 75 health care professionals and served on many Cleveland Clinic task forces and committees, including Ethics, HIPAA Implementation and Geriatric Strategic Planning. A part-time faculty member at Cleveland State and Akron Universities, she also has served as adjunct faculty at Case Western Reserve University and Ursuline College.

I see children, adolescents and families dealing with issues including depression, anxiety, ADHD, school refusal, chronic illness, adjustment disorders, I help clients develop coping skills to manage their symptoms and assist them with functioning more effectively in their daily lives. I provide active listening and structured feedback, and also work with parents to ensure that we are all working together towards a common goal.

Bill Hamilton received his master's degree in social work from Case Western Reserve University and his bachelor's degree from Baldwin-Wallace College. He served in supervisory and investigation positions with the Cuyahoga County Department of Children and Family Services for 20 years. He is a member of the International Dyslexia Association and on the Board of Directors with the Lutheran Metropolitan Ministries START program, which serves at-risk youth. He also serves as an adjunct instructor for Case Western Reserve and Cleveland State Universities.

She has a specialized interest in working with dual diagnosis, panic disorder, life transitions, mood disorders and anxiety disorders.
