I have experience working with clients who suffer from a range of mental illnesses, including depression, anxiety, adjustment disorder, and more. I take an approach that involves meeting clients where they are. I learn about their stories and assess what the right path is for their needs and goals. Having a client who is open and receptive to therapy is all a therapist could and should ask for.

The people I am best suited to help are those who are struggling with relationship concerns, hyperactive minds, past abuse and trauma, and those who feel disconnected from a sense of meaning and purpose in their lives. I want to help those who wish to cultivate a more stable intention towards wellness, more quiet in their minds, and a deeper connection with others.

I have a great passion to help people of all ages, religions backgrounds, genders and sexualities. It has always been important that my clients and I have a good relationship based on mutual respect and understanding. I have been working in the mental health field for 10 years. In this time I have done extensive work in schools (advocacy, counseling, IEP/ETR work, and making plans for student success), in hospitals, and in client's homes. In this time I have picked up the ability to work with any situation, big or small.

I believe that meaningful change happens when we walk alongside each other through life's difficulties. Together, we can explore the roots of unhealthy patterns, distressing thoughts, harmful behaviors, and intense emotions, often stemming from a deep longing for connection with oneself and others.

Are you feeling anxious? Are you having trouble setting and reaching your goals? Are you feeling uneasy about your next steps? If your answer is yes, I believe that although this can be a difficult time, it is also an opportunity for growth. Feeling unsatisfied isn’t a bad thing. It can be the first step to making change and a time for rediscovery.

I specialize in treating clients with chronic anxiety. So many of my clients struggle with things like uncertainty, chronic stress, overthinking, past trauma, and imposter syndrome. They may even have intrusive, unwanted thoughts or excessively worry and have repeated panic attacks. These things too often impair their relationships and prevent them from falling asleep at night. I use an evidenced-based treatment model to guide my clients overcome things like these and embrace their anxiety and develop a growth mindset so they can live their best lives.

My therapeutic approaches are based on current theories, and I have published many articles on these issues, including a 2023 book on my model of body trauma therapy, available at Routledge.
I am a certified psychoanalyst and I work exclusively with individuals wanting long-term treatment to address lifelong suffering usually due to abuse or trauma. I offer both contemporary psychoanalysis and embodied psychotherapy, as appropriate, to address mind, body, and emotional issues that continue impact your current life and relationships. This approach is designed to expand treatment beyond short-lived symptom relief into transforming the actual origins of your issues, symptoms, and daily suffering. You can learn more about me and the ways I practice by visiting my website: www.edwardnovak.com

We are all hu man at the end of the day.
I have served those with Anxiety, Depression, Bipolar, Schizophrenia, Family Issues, etc. My ideal client is motivated to roll up their sleeves and engage in the therapeutic process. They have an open mind and can practice effective coping skills to improve their overall functioning and quality of life. They can challenge themselves to be vulnerable and practice accountability while processing their problematic thinking patterns and behaviors in a safe and non-judgmental environment. They wish to engage in therapy because they realize that they need to make a change and are willing to take a leap of faith to make it happen.

Individuals thrive toward their potential when their relationships are healthy and supportive. Being in healthy relationship is how we, as individuals and families, are sustained in the long term. Relationships that are healthy are consistent, have structure, are interdependent, and provide instruction that fosters individual and collective resiliency and progress. When relationships are in crisis, individuals must be guided toward identifying the behaviors and attitudes that bring on conflict. When this awareness is achieved, change is possible. Here, attention to individual and relationship needs is equally important in the therapeutic process.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
