We specialize in working with trauma survivors, LGBTQIA+, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, Trans and Gender-Nonconforming, Self-Harming, Addicted, fat/larger-bodied, disabled, kink/BDSM, and polyamorous people.
You worry all the time about being judged by other people. You feel disconnected from your body and, at the same time, feel like it’s all you think about. You question what you say, how your body looks, if you’re doing things “right,” and there are so many times where your mind feels like it’s on a hamster wheel that you can’t stop. You feel on edge all day and sometimes even feel like you may be having a heart attack. You don’t feel like you fit in anywhere. You’ve been made fun of before for so many different parts of who you are. You’ve been called weird or have been misunderstood at work, in your family, and even in some of your dating relationships. You’ve struggled to find someone who feels like a good fit romantically, and you’re worried there’s something wrong with you. You want to feel more connected to yourself again…

I work well with couples and individuals. My personal experience with meditation and mindfulness and extensive training in various modalities is front and center for guiding clients towards a balanced, self regulated and awesome life. I am a trained IMAGO therapist (Harville Hendrix's work). Clients/couples who suffer from anxiety, despair and depression will find my practice not only helpful but enlivening. I consider healing through the lens of a wellness model and not a pathological one. Sometimes it's the greatest struggle that brings about the greatest positive change.

We get so many messages in our lives about what is expected and how we "should" be living; social media, friends, and culture can all provide an idea of what we should be reaching for, which can often feel confusing and frustrating. If we grow up with family dysfunction and trauma, it can seem even more confusing. We struggle with these expectations and somehow still feel we are coming up short. It can become an exhausting pursuit! It gets harder and harder to listen to our own voice, and what our needs are.

Adults, Teens, and Children in need of counseling benefit from Creative Arts Therapy, as do families, and couples. I offer the optional use of Creative Arts to help clients gain a much needed perspective to assist them in their healing. Words, alone, cannot fully express your feelings. The creative arts can provide a potent "language" for expression and requires no previous art making experience. Paint, college, clay, mask-making, and creative writing help clients express, understand, and transform their feelings into allies for healing. Art Therapy has been designated as a mind-body approach by the National Institute of Health.

Through art making, counseling, and cutting edge eye movement therapy treatments, I help individuals resolve problematic thoughts and behaviors and find relief from overwhelming physical sensations associated with difficult or adverse experiences.
Trauma isn’t what happens to us. It’s what happens inside of us. If I have learned anything from my own pain, my clients' pain, and the failures of our current system of mental health treatment, it’s that we are constantly misunderstanding the role of traumatic experience. Together we will find a therapeutic approach that works for you and your unique experience. In order to create lasting change in our lives, we need more from therapy than a verbal exchange. Over the last ten years, I have studied and employed a variety of experiential methods to address the root causes of trauma and help individuals invite lasting personal growth.

My clients often struggle with relationship issues stemming from early childhood trauma; this results in coping mechanisms that work, but may carry a big price tag. They may grapple with sexual abuse, partner violence, sexual orientation and/ or disability related issues. Often, these manifest as substance abuse, cutting, communication problems or self- isolating behaviors. They may have friends and family members who do not truly "see" them, and as a result their own view of self is dim. Other clients are coping with situational anxiety and depression related to Covid, and need to establish safety, structure and hope.

As a solution-focused, mindfulness based cognitive/behavioral psychologist, I work by collaborating with you to identify problem areas and devise manageable strategies in the service of gradual, stepwise change. Our work looks at perceptions, thoughts, feelings and behavior and helps you alter and manage these. The fact that you are indeed able to make change becomes surprisingly clear to you, and it is done at a pace that feels workable.

Tired of feeling like something’s missing? So many of us have unknowingly disconnected from our Original Nature, the one that is playful, loving, kind, creative and fearless. Some of us remember our true nature as a child and how free and open we felt. Why have we become so disconnected from it? Short answer is: FEAR…fear of failure, loss, rejection, abandonment. All of this fear leads to creating walls/barriers in an attempt to feel safe but it’s just perpetuates more suffering and keeps us feeling disconnected from those we love. Come and explore with me how to remove protective barriers and love authentically!

I have been an individual and family/couples therapist for more than 25 years - It is reassuring to see all the changes that have developed over time. There are so many options for people including brief consultations as well as video sessions. I think people today are more comfortable creating good smart relationships with therapists and are seeking out a good fit. The internet helps with this. For me, a good fit would be someone who is ready for work, has an open mind, and is curious about themselves and interested in making change. I am a clinician who is direct and fairly straIght forward as well as supportive and kind.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
