Additionally, as a couples therapist, I draw upon my expertise in the Gottman Method and utilize the PACT model to help couples not just survive but thrive together.
Envision a life free from the burdens of past trauma, where you connect deeply in your relationships with others and your relationship with yourself. This is the transformative power of trauma therapy that focuses on relationships– it's about transformation from the inside out. As human beings, we need love and connection. When these essential needs are unmet, we may find ourselves feeling spiraling in all areas of our lives, wondering how things got so out of hand. The gift of therapy is the path of freedom, self-discovery, and deep understanding.

My training as an Art Therapist, Social Worker, Psychoanalyst and Life Coach provide me with a unique combination of skills and resources which I use in the service of helping my clients find clarity in life, and achieve their goals. Sometimes we feel angry, sad, frustrated, anxious and unfulfilled without really knowing why. The combination of knowing and understanding our past, in the context of our present life, provides us with an invaluable amount of information we can use to understand and change how we feel and what we do in our lives.

My approach to therapy is to, first and foremost, provide a safe environment, free from judgment, where clients can feel confident to express their thoughts and feelings. Therapy involves a collaboration between therapist and client to explore and process the impact circumstances, events and primary relationships, past or current, have on the client’s life. In understanding the challenges client’s face as they strive to make positive changes, we work together to identify and target behaviors that no longer serve them well.

At times it may seem as if we're at odds with our mind. The thoughts and feelings we experience seem overwhelming. We can convince ourselves we're undeserving of contentment, love, happiness, success, acceptance, etc. Where does that come from and why is it so easy to believe? For those of us in the LGBTQIA+ community, there are added layers we need to work through, making it difficult for us to thrive. Therapy can play a meaningful role by providing a space to work through the layers, confront our hurtful thoughts and feelings, unburden ourselves of the past, and truly learn to thrive.

This bickering, this fighting. It's becoming constant. You feel distant and disengaged. Why can’t you communicate the way you used to? You are often misunderstood. Impatience and frustration have taken over. Where's the compromise? Sleeping is getting increasingly difficult. You keep remembering those harsh words: your mind keeps repeating them over and over. With so much desire and unmet needs, you and your partner are drifting further and further apart.

Although I have worked with a wide-range of people and problems throughout my career, I have become more focused lately on couples, families, and partners of all kinds. Whether it is conflict, a desire to separate, or just a desire to make things better, I work with people to help them with interpersonal issues they may have in the marriage, in the family, or at work. People who work with me appreciate that I am an author, an academic, and someone who believes strongly in the power of psychology to help them live better and more fulfilling lives.

Psychobiological Approach Couple Therapy
How does the psychobiological approach to couples therapy work?
The psychobiological approach to couples therapy combines research in three domains—attachment theory, developmental neuroscience, and arousal regulation—to address relationship challenges. Couples learn about their underlying emotional and physiological responses to different situations so as to identify these responses and then shift them with the help of practice exercises in sessions.
Is the psychobiological approach to couples therapy evidence-based?
While some research has been conducted by its creator, there is little peer-reviewed research to support the efficacy of the psychobiological approach to couples therapy. It’s not as evidence-based as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, or acceptance and commitment therapy.
How long does the psychobiological approach to couples therapy last?
The psychobiological approach to couples therapy is a relatively short-term therapy, typically less than 12 sessions. However, individual sessions can be much longer. A typical couples therapy session lasts 45 minutes, while these sessions often last for two to three hours, and sometimes three to six hours. Some couples may opt to attend two or three sessions per week.
What are the limitations of the psychobiological approach to couples therapy?
A limitation of the psychobiological approach to couples therapy is that the evidence is much more limited than it is for other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, or acceptance and commitment therapy. Additionally, the psychobiological approach to couples therapy only applies to couples in relationships, so keep in mind that it cannot treat mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety.
