We may experience things in our lives that feel like they change who we are and our view of the world. As a result, we may feel loneliness, distrust, anger, sadness, numbness, shame, and guilt. We may not allow ourselves to experience the wide range of human emotions and limit our connection with others as a way to protect ourselves. I believe that people are resilient, able to heal from trauma, and can reconnect with their authentic, genuine selves.

Are you checking all the boxes in life but still feeling stuck, depressed or anxious? Feeling like you are just going through the motions of life but not truly "happy"? Many times these feelings are connected to negative and limiting beliefs about the way we view ourselves and the world. These negative and limiting beliefs often stem from difficult experiences we have in life, many times in childhood. We all have wounds that live in the shadows of ourselves and these wounds can subconsciously run our lives. I help people release themselves from these wounds and step into their most authentic self.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst with over 30 years of experience in solo private practice, teaching and service in the community. Having a relationship with my patients and taking care of them are central in my work. Perhaps because of my background in the arts (dance), I also deeply value the creative yet disciplined use of self and an active authentic engagement in the therapeutic process. I specialize in the treatment of adolescents and young adults (18-25). I also treat individuals, couples, and families who struggle with transitional issues throughout the life cycle.

Life can be complex, messy, and difficult to function in. I work with both individuals and couples/families and there is no limit to what kind of issues or goals you can have for therapy. Anxiety, eating disorders, work/school stress, depression, and family trauma don't even begin to scratch the surface of what you can bring to the session when you meet with me.

If you’re reading this, you already have the motivation to heal, the insight to know you need a change and the resourcefulness to seek support. You knew enough to get yourself to this page and I know enough to take you through the journey you may be scared of and yet eager for. Working as a specialist in eating disorders and trauma, I understand the highs and lows of being self-critical to the point of self-punishment, blaming yourself for the situation you are in and being stuck in an endless cycle of overriding your gut instinct in order to please others. Recognize that your intuition got you to these words.

I also have specialized training in the treatment of Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa and work from a Family Based Treatment model whenever possible.
There is no shortage of challenges in this life. Managing life stressors or a mental health condition alone only tends to make things worse. You’ve taken a courageous and important step by looking for help. When you work with the right therapist, insight can grow, self-defeating habits can change and solutions can become more apparent. I regularly see adults and adolescents seeking help with relationship difficulties, stress and life transitions. My experience in the school system informs my work with adolescents, young adults and their families.

I am a trauma specialist providing virtual appointments throughout NY and Florida and in person appointments in Western NY. You would seek out a cardiologist if you had a heart issue right? Well, if you have the opportunity, I suggest you seek out a therapist who specializes in your unique issues. I am not a generalist; I specialize in Trauma, Dissociation, Eating Disorders, Body Dysmorphia and anxiety. I work with these issues because they're what I'm most passionate about and I've dedicated my life's work to combatting the systemic issues that cause or exacerbate those issues.

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
