You're trapped. Triggered by stress and fueled by thoughts of hating your body, you're in a tailspin of distorted thinking and behaviors that help to ease that pain for a nanosecond. Then the shame and guilt swallow you, and it starts all over again. The legacy of trauma has left you constantly battling feelings of worthlessness and self-doubt. The pain of past relationships still haunts you, leaving you anxious, isolated, and disconnected from yourself and others. You want to break free from these patterns, and rebuild your self-esteem. You long to feel at peace with yourself and your body. You're ready to reclaim your life.

My goal is to provide empowering, therapeutic counseling to individuals who had, have, and will experience the complexity of bringing a child into this world. I believe that all members of the family could benefit from support with this significant physical and emotional transition to increase parenting confidence, advocacy, and provide a safe place to process this experience.

Suffer less, cope better, like yourself and life more? If you find yourself feeling stuck, unmotivated, worried, or lost, you are not alone. No matter our age, identity, or background, we all struggle with issues of growth, change, learning, love, and loss. These things are often part of life, but they're not always a matter of psychological conditions. If you're seeking the knowledge, skills, and support to overcome your challenges (but not a diagnosis or prescription), then my holistic coaching services are designed for you.

Social therapy is a non-diagnositic, radically humanistic and relational approach to therapy and life which locates people's emotional pain and problems in society rather than in the individual.
I work with people who want to grow - emotionally, intellectually, professionally - in order to be more satisfied with their lives. I am an active partner in my clients' emotional growth and well-being. When people call me, whether in crisis or struggling with one of life's ordinary challenges, they are often in pain, feeling alone and overhwelmed. I help them unpackage their beliefs and ways of understanding and doing their lives. Together, we are better equipped to discover and create new possibilities: new ways of seeing, relating and doing life and relationships.

My group practice specializes in the treatment of trauma spectrum disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder, dissociative disorders, trauma-related pain, and trauma-related somatic symptoms. Ongoing experiences of verbal, physical, or sexual abuse, neglect, and bullying can lead to these symptoms. Sometimes people suffer these effects because they have experienced chronic invalidation. We treat couples, people in non-traditional partnerships, adolescents who struggle with emotional and behavioral problems. We also treat survivors of sexual violence and targets of workplace bullying.

I have worked with trauma, depression and anxiety, chronic pain, as well as anger and just "life stuff".
An ideal client to me is someone who wants to improve their mental health and practice self care. Therapy not only can improve mental health, but it improves communication and helps the client gain insight into themselves. They may not know exactly what is causing them to feel so much depression, anxiety, anger and/or the multitude of emotions we humans feel. Therapy can help bring out what is inside, what is down deep. The ideal client is someone who is motivated, the rest will fall into place!

My clients are typically “high achievers,” parentified children or people pleasers who seek to know themselves more deeply. I specialize in working with disordered eating, life transitions, anxiety and depression. Our work together offers a space to bring into more conscious awareness, unacknowledged pain, longings and barriers to substantive nourishment of self. When the remnants of our past emerge in our present, it can feel disorienting and painful. I offer curiosity, warmth and empathy towards these emergent experiences and accompany you in deepening your self-understanding.

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
