Sometimes it really makes sense to have a confidential setting to talk about overwhelming feelings or difficult circumstances. I have many years of experience helping people find their strengths in challenging situations. I use techniques that help people reduce depression and anxiety and increase feelings of well-being. I enjoy helping my clients develop skills that they can use independently. Currently, my caseload is full, and I am not taking new clients.

It takes immense courage to embrace therapy; you should be proud of taking this step. There are as many reasons to seek help as there are challenges in life. Perhaps you are noticing recurring tension, pain, or unpleasant sensations in your body? Or are you functioning well at work, but noticing that it’s difficult to connect to a deeper sense of belonging and meaning? Do traumatic memories keep lingering at the surface despite your efforts to put them behind you? Have you already sought help, spent many sessions venting about your worries and traumas, but wound up more frustrated and triggered than you were before?

I view therapy as a partnership and work well with clients who are driven to gain understandings of themselves and life, both autonomously and collaboratively. Every person has their own strengths, which can be harnessed to develop insight and change into their lifestyles and perspectives. I also acknowledge that everyone has their own past experiences that have led them to today. I strive to establish rapport with my clients and a space to feel safe and validated to foster a deeper level of empowerment, personal growth and self-acceptance.

Sometimes life throws us obstacles that leave us feeling overwhelmed, stuck, and maybe even unheard or misunderstood by those in our lives. This can be extremely frustrating. As a psychologist, I help people feel heard during difficult times and find ways to get unstuck. Together we will explore the traps that keep you stuck and discover how your internal critic contributes to or exacerbates your challenges. Distress is a normal part of life that affects everyone to varying degrees. I will work collaboratively with you to help you learn to live a fulfilling life despite the challenges you might be facing.

Being human isn't easy. Being with other humans can be even more difficult! Looking for new ways to deal with the challenges of life, relationships, and the negative repetitive patterns in your own brain? Sometimes it helps to talk to someone in a non-judgmental, open and curious way to help sort things out, explore new ground, practice new responses to the same old patterns, or know yourself (and a loved one) in a new way.

Do you find yourself feeling stuck in certain feelings? We call emotions "feelings" because they are experienced physically first, and then words are put to what is felt. If talking yourself out of uncomfortable feelings isn't working, you may want to try body-based therapy. All of your emotions are needed to fully express yourself, just as a dancer needs a full range of motion, and an artist needs every color. I help clients to cope with uncomfortable and painful feelings in order to open up to feeling safe experiencing the full range of human emotions. I offer traditional talk therapy, body-based therapy, and Walk & Talk therapy.

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
