Experiential Therapy in Stony Brook, NY
I had a philosophy professor who said their answering machine held the two most important questions we could ask ourselves. “Who are you? and “What do you want?” We don’t always know what those answers are, but we can find them out together. Whether you’ve been in therapy before or this is your first step towards change, I am confident we can create goals that are right for you. Making a change is a difficult step and I’m here to help you in that transition in any way I can. Together we will identify areas in your life that you want to see change in, and how to shift from surviving to thriving.

My passion and interest is in people, their stories, their struggles and their triumphs. This has led me to my mission to help people create the life they have always wanted. I passionately believe that the key of being a good therapist/counselor/coach/mentor is not to help people be something they’re not... but it’s to help people become more of who they really are!

We all encounter wounds from different phases of life, relationships and traumas. However, we aren’t always taught the tools that offer us resolution and healing. We are conditioned to be victimized by this pain rather than transforming it for a greater purpose. I believe when we integrate using our gifts towards life’s challenges and fully embrace the darkness within us, we can use it to our advantage, turning our pain into purpose.

I believe there is strength to be found in our weaknesses, love to be found through our pain, and light after our darkest days. The pain of healing comes with the self-awareness that otherwise may be over looked. When it becomes more painful to stay in our past then it is scary to step out of it is when the journey begins. I walk beside my clients, not in-front or behind. I remain steady and follow their lead. I provide the safety and hope that everyone needs to face their pain, to feel their pain, and to keep going anyway.

As I think about my journey as an artist - evolving toward art therapy and the clinical world, honing in on my definitions and applications, while recognizing art’s interventions in my own life - I realize these ideals are why I started a therapeutic private practice many years ago. Any creative process can be healing and the possibilities are infinite when blending the process with deep discussion, clinical based talk therapies, spiritual connection, life coaching and vocational services. I have made it my life's mission in sharing these tools to facilitate personal growth, positive change and reach one’s ultimate potential.

Life is tough. Are you feeling anxious, overwhelmed, stuck? I am here for you. Sometimes words are just not enough. Our bodies tell us things all the time. I will help you, or your child, to develop awareness of those signs, and work to identify coping skills to best support you. Art making and creativity in art therapy allow you to break through barriers from the inside out. You may discover an alternative way to communicate your thoughts, feelings and needs. Let's explore the patterns that are no longer serving you. We can work as a team to navigate life barriers and get you back to a fulfilling routine.

The unfolding nature of our lives is a sacred journey and can be trusted. When we know how to listen, engage and trust the wisdom of our own lives, journeys and hearts, we become more ourselves. I view therapy as a process of learning to listen and live life more authentically, from our inner GPS, rather than from others telling us who we are, who we should be and what to think/do/etc. This process is key to life satisfaction as we become the person we were meant to be.

Experiential Therapy
How does experiential therapy work?
Experiential therapy works by allowing an individual to use their creativity to re-imagine themselves and their lives in an effort to process their emotions. Experiential therapy may take many forms, including engaging clients through art, re-enactments, role-playing, music, or forms of physical recreation. By focusing on these activities, experiential therapists help individuals identify the emotions they associate with previous experiences and work together to cope with negative reactions, like fear, anger, or shame.
Is experiential therapy evidence-based?
Experiential therapy incorporates many therapy modalities, some of which have been more closely researched than others. Music therapy, for example, has been shown to help with sleep problems. Some studies find that art therapy can be beneficial for those with eating disorders or personality disorders, while other research suggests that such approaches have little impact.
How long does experiential therapy last?
The duration of experiential therapy will depend on the type of therapy used as well as the severity of the challenges an individual faces. Play therapy sessions may last for 30 to 45 minutes, and usually occur weekly for about 20 sessions. Art therapy may comprise 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Music therapy sessions generally last between 30 and 50 minutes and can be scheduled weekly or on an as-needed basis. For each therapy type, clients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.
Does experiential therapy help with trauma?
Trauma is one area where experiential therapy may be useful. Traumatic experiences such as combat or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating visual art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. Listening to music can be relaxing, while making music as part of a group provides plenty of opportunities to connect with other people. Play therapy is often of value to children who have experienced a loss or distressing family experience, or who have been physically or emotionally abused.
