My intensive training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) has expanded my work to include pre-teens and adolescents with high risk destructive behaviors including suicide and self-injury.
For 30 years, my work has been dedicated to adults, children and families, specializing in emotional and behavioral problems. My belief is that most people are committed to doing the best they can & have the capacity for change with the right support and skill. I service clients with a wide range of diagnoses including depression, anxiety, ADHD, and borderline personality disorder. When children and teens are in crisis, so are their families. Finding a good therapist can be a daunting experience! My office setting is comfortable and inviting & well equipped for therapeutic play. I welcome phone consultation before scheduling an appointment.

If you're someone who is dealing with anxiety, depression, grieving, financial strains, marital/family issues, behavioral issues with your children, identity issues, or employment issues - You and I may be a great fit to work together. I invite you to think of therapy as a process where we will identify your unique issue, and go down the road of discovery to help you understand your beliefs, values and systems around your current lifestyle. As we develop deeper understanding of your unique view of the world we can then cultivate a life you're excited about and achieve freedom from these problems/situations you feel stuck in.

In life, we all experience both positive and negative life events that affect our mental health and well-being. It's not just the actual experiences that we encounter, but how we come out of those experiences as the best version of ourselves that creates space for even more growth and maturity, no matter how big or small the event/experience is. Therapy is an ongoing process that takes dedication and an open mind. Our mental health directly correlates to our physical, emotional and spiritual health. It starts with the mind. How we interpret and receive things is essential in understanding who we are and who we want to be.

Over the past 37 years I have had much success in helping adults, teens and children deal with a wide range of emotional, psychological and behavioral problems. These include depression, anxiety, anger, and sexual difficulties. I have been especially helpful in treating people experiencing relationship problems, as well as helping people break through the barriers that hold them back in life. I believe with time, patience, perseverance and motivation psychotherapy can be an effective treatment for symptom reduction and personal growth.

You may have found yourself stumbling over the same problem. Some are experiencing anxiety or depression. Perhaps your irritation over situations is overriding your previous levels of patience. You find yourself avoiding challenges, at times even avoiding relationships. It is time to consider a different alternative. Psychotherapy offers a reflective view of your past life experiences and their impact on you overtime. Often when analyzing the reflective experience, it explains current feelings and responses and allows you to become objective. This objectivity gives you clarity and increases your choices and control.

Healing doesn’t happen when we have all the answers; but, when we begin to ask ourselves those questions we have been avoiding. With the help of an unbiased, and judgement free therapist, you can explore those difficult questions in a safe place. The therapeutic process can heal each individual, from past severities to our current presenting problems. Rather than, “how do I fix the problem for the client? It’s “how can I provide a therapeutic relationship this client can use for their own personal growth?

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
