Getting started is the hardest part. This is true of most things requiring significant time and energy. The decision to seek psychotherapy may not sound difficult, but acting on it can be. Seeking help suggests that we can't do it alone. Whether or not we can, I believe we shouldn't have to. Life is hard. Relationships are complicated. The world throws us a curveball and we find ourselves overwhelmed, disappointed or depressed. We lose a loved one, a job or have trouble finding meaningful work. We make bad decisions, or when we make good decisions, things don't turn out as we expect.

Have you been contemplating exploring yourself in a deeper way? Do you feel as though you are being blocked in understanding yourself or working toward your goals? I specialize in helping individuals get to the root of what is going on through self-exploration and gaining insight. I approach my work with individuals through a nonjudgemental, open, curious lens. I prefer to view my clients as "fellow travelers", as we are both on this journey together. No one person is immune to the struggles of human existence. I have experience working with college students and adults. I value the unique aspects that each individual brings.

Therapy can address difficult situations but it is also helpful with normal problems in the normal course of life. I believe therapy helps to relieve painful and uncomfortable feelings and it can be a journey of self discovery and awareness that will lead to a more fulfilling life. People begin working with me when they are having difficulty adjusting to a current life situation and others seek to address their struggles with depression, anxiety, or relationships.

Are you feeling consumed by worry and anxiety? Do you feel that some days you struggle to complete basic tasks? Are you finding that you doubt yourself and your choices? You are doing your best to survive, coping in ways you’ve learned due to your environment and past experiences. Although you realize these reactions or behaviors cause more suffering, you are simply doing the best you can. Relationships around you, both personal and professional, feel the pressure and you are ready to explore change. I have years of experience supporting Mental Health and Addiction. Change is possible and healing DOES come.

The importance of relationships within our daily lives is often overlooked or forgotten when we struggle. Focusing on relationships, I use personal interaction to promote healing inside and outside of the therapeutic setting. Through the use of video conferencing, I work with individuals and couples who struggle in areas such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and grief, as well as family and couples relational dynamics. My treatment style integrates compassion, support, and humor to build resiliency through self-regulation, encourage growth, and promote self-discovery.

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?Trust that your within you lies personal power. You may not have fully tapped into that yet and that is okay. Self compassion goes a long way and we are all met with challenges we don’t understand. It can be very confusing. I say “the deeper the cut, the deeper the ability to start healing.” The key to unlocking our potential is to be open to seeing life in a different lens. I practice Cognitive Behavioral Therapy which helps you reprogram your brain and alter thought patterns. When you change your thoughts, you change your world.

Life can feel overwhelming and confusing when we are met with expectations that do not align with authentic self. I believe positive and effective change can happen once we become more confident and empowered within ourselves. I work with individuals to feel confident to make effective change within their life in order meet their personal and therapeutic goals. I primarily work individuals with disrupted attachments related to childhood trauma, and sexual trauma; in addition to depression, anxiety, OCD (specifically related to Relationships, Contamination, and Perfectionism), and Borderline Personality Disorder.

You sign off of work for the day and push out a deep sigh. Okay, the day was productive, but you feel drained. There are the plans you have with friends this weekend, that's something to look forward to. A small knot twists in your stomach as you remember feeling low-key out of the loop the last time you were all together. Shrugging it off as you think of what you'll order for dinner, your mind does its over-thinking thing again. Your break-up- was that your fault? Not this again, you roll your eyes, frustrated with yourself for continuing to think about it. Why won't your mind just quiet down? Everything is "fine," isn't it?

As long as you keep moving, everything is okay. Taking on extra assignments at work. Doing favors for friends and loved ones. Always going the extra mile to ensure you don’t disappoint anyone. But, as soon as you slow down for a moment, the emptiness returns. It’s as though something integral is missing from your life. Thinking about it causes crippling anxiety, so you do your best to ignore it. But things keep getting worse. You know you should take time to reflect and heal, but you feel guilty. If only you had the confidence to reclaim that sense of self that has been missing for so long. You worry you may feel this way forever.

Psychoanalytic Therapists

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
