Sessions often focus on behaviors, thoughts, feelings and ways of interacting that individuals repeat in spite of a wish to behave differently. Areas of expertise include individuals, (adults and teens) couples, families and groups. Our work together may include interpersonal and relationship issues at work, home and school. I specialize in grief and complicated grief as well as anxiety, anger, depression and other mood disorders.

I have dedicated my career to making a positive impact on the lives of children, adolescents, adults, and their families. Through my diverse work experience, first as a special education teacher and now as psychotherapist I have witnessed first hand the struggles of families and individuals of all ages, facing a wide array of issues including, among others, depression, anxiety, ADHD and substance abuse. Through counseling, I work together with clients to identify and understand the source and nature of the challenges they face and to help them formulate effective solutions to such challenges.

I believe therapy should provide an emotionally safe space, away from the day-to-day demands of life, where collaborative work can bring about a deepened sense of self-awareness. I provide specific strategies and techniques for working through emotional and relationship issues, limiting thought patterns, trauma and loss. The ultimate goal of therapy is to gain the ability to take what is learned there and to utilize that new understanding and newly developed coping skills independently. I work with adults and adolescents, most often individually but with spouses or other family members and significant others when it is deemed by us to be useful.

We’ve been through a lot these past few years, maybe longer. You somehow are keeping it together, but the feeling of thriving is distant. Maybe you are too in your head or distracted to experience life fully. Procrastination is interfering with doing the things you know would help. Perhaps resentment or dissatisfaction has taken over your relationships- Maybe your child is struggling, Or perhaps you are dealing with something more intense; gender questioning or transition; a history of trauma; a significant life change. You've been thinking about finding support, now maybe you're ready. You want to reconnect with resilience and joy

I create a safe, supportive environment so that each individual feels comfortable to share their story and express their feelings. In knowing that one size does not fit all, I develop a treatment plan tailored to each individual’s specific needs. I help my clients to understand their behaviors, thought processes, and habits through self-exploration while guiding them towards reaching their personal goals.

It's not just you. Countless people are feeling lost, unmoored, and stuck in old patterns, and the usual/traditional "how does that make you feel?" therapy can sometimes feel lacking. With over 8 years in the mental health field, both as a Mental Health Counselor and Psychologist, I recognize that mental health is so much more than what is happening internally. My work is rooted in the belief that mental health cannot be addressed in isolation from other aspects of your life, such as your relationships, health, community, and broader social issues and systems. Tackling all this alone can feel so daunting.

Therapy can be a space to expand your sense of yourself. While a specific problem may bring you to therapy, I believe that my patients are often helped by gaining insight into (and ultimately, mastery over) long-standing patterns in their relationships, feelings, or behaviors. This approach helps to create lasting change. I work with children, adolescents, and adults who have a variety of concerns, some of which include shame, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, trauma, life transitions, or a vague sense of being disconnected from oneself.

Transgender Therapists

As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?

A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?

Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?

An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?

Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
