I am trained in Behavioral and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as well as Motivational Interviewing for individuals with problems related to substance use, anger, anxiety, depression, and serious mental illness.
Struggling to cope with intense worry, sadness, or anger can feel overwhelming and lonely. Reducing alcohol or other substance use can be similarly isolating and intertwined with negative emotions. Recognizing that there is a problem can be the largest hurdle, but finding a way to make those changes does not have to be. You may have already made attempts to change on your own and make things better, but it hasn’t quite worked out. Often, what to do and when to do it is not clear.

I don’t believe that one size fits all, so I make sure to utilize a combination of skills such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Mindfulness, Person-Centered Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing.
The first step is always the hardest, no matter what you’re struggling with. I believe that with the right tools and mindset, you can make some serious changes to the way you live your life. I specialize in working with adolescents, young adults, and adults who struggle with ADHD, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, trauma, grief, relationship complications, and LGBTQ issues. In my practice, I make sure to create a safe, welcoming, judge-free environment where you are free to be yourself.

Let's work together to identify your personal strengths and use them to move you toward the life you want to live. You do not have to feel "stuck" forever.

If human beings are hard wired to be in relationships, then why are they so difficult sometimes? Especially after the past couple of years (did someone say pandemic?), we can find ourselves going through conflict and stress with loved ones. Struggling to find ways to cope and communicate may lead to endless arguments or feelings of hopelessness. You don’t have to be alone in the struggle. I work with both couples and individuals experiencing addictions, anxiety, depression and loss. I approach therapy as a creative conversation that not only helps to "put out the fire" but also to figure out how it started to begin with.

Starting therapy can be scary! It takes a lot of courage to face the unknown and walk into a situation with the purpose of creating change. Offering a safe environment for you to tell your stories and feel your feelings is, for me, the most important aspect of the therapeutic relationship. As a therapist, you will find me to be warm, caring, and nonjudgmental. I will share with you my observations, help you gain insight into your problems, and give you new tools to cope. Sometimes, we'll laugh -- a sense of humor is very important in the healing process!

Ray DiStephan, LCSW. I have been working with teens and their families for the past 28 years. I have an in-depth understanding of public education and special education. I also work with adults and focus on building a personal rapport with every individual that I work with. Together we look for and find some strategies and a few answers. Generally, yes. But each individual is different, and his/her/their reason for being in counseling can greatly vary. Goals are an important piece, but only after some trust is established.

Motivational Interviewing Therapists

How does motivational interviewing work?

Motivational interviewing aims to uncover a person’s internal motivation to change their life. Toward this end, the therapist listens, empathizes, and collaborates with the client based on their perspective; the therapist doesn’t adhere to a predetermined plan for change or impose their viewpoint on the client. Discovering an individual’s most important reasons for change, and guiding them to achieve those changes, can empower people to shift from ambivalence to action.

Is motivational interviewing evidence-based?

Yes, research shows that motivational interviewing can help treat alcohol and substance use — and in different ways such as reducing drinking, reducing resistance, and increasing the likelihood of staying in treatment. Motivational interviewing has also been shown to help people lose weight, adhere to medication regimens, improve diet for those with Type II diabetes, and improve healthy behaviors in children.

How long does motivational interviewing last?

Motivational interviewing is a short-term therapy that can last just one or two sessions. In some cases, motivational interviewing may be used in conjunction with longer-term therapies, but for most people, motivational interviewing is a brief intervention that aims to help patients understand their personal, specific, and internal reasons for changing their life.

What differentiates motivational interviewing from person-centered therapy?

In person-centered therapy, the individual is in the driver’s seat of the treatment process, creating space for them to trust their instincts and arrive at their own solutions. The two approaches are similar because motivational interviewing is also client-centered; however, person-centered therapy is more open-ended while motivational interviewing is somewhat more structured; the goal is to change, and the therapist helps the client specifically discover their internal motivations to modify their behavior.
