I have worked with adult, adolescent and child populations with depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective, personality disorders and substance use disorders.
I am enthusiastic about my work with my clients. It is important to meet clients where they are and provide empathic, compassionate encouragement to assist them to work towards achieving their goals. I have practiced various therapeutic modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution Based Therapy and Mindfulness Techniques. I mostly use CBT because of its effectiveness, and likewise, clients of all ages can utilize it.

Most of us encounter life challenges that can become unmanageable, its important to know that you are not alone. Congratulations on taking your first step towards emotional empowerment! This step is usually one of the hardest as it means that you have been thinking about making changes, probably for quite some time, and are finally ready. It takes a lot of courage to do that! It helps to know that you have a trusted and objective professional who has worked in clinical settings with individuals in crisis, chronic health illnesses, hematology/oncology, adolescent medicine, mental health, medical and bereavement.

Incorporating movement therapy allows your teen to relieve stress and work through emotional challenges physically, making therapy more accessible and effective.
As a parent, it’s heartbreaking to see your teen struggling, and you might feel lost and unsure how to reach them. Maybe your once outgoing child has become withdrawn, spending hours alone in their room, avoiding family or friends. Perhaps they’ve become irritable, lashing out over small things, or you’ve noticed their grades slipping, and they’re uninterested in activities they used to love. Your teen could be feeling anxious or overwhelmed, struggling to get through the day, leaving you feeling helpless.

In most cases, the child or adolescent does not need to attend treatment sessions.
Do you have a child who suffers from anxiety? I specialize in a parent-based treatment for kids with anxiety called SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions). SPACE treatment has been shown to help kids overcome anxiety by teaching parents to become great coaches.

At Fisher Psychological Services PLLC., we understand that human beings encounter the stressors of life in a variety of different ways. Whether it’s the pressure from our jobs, family conflicts, problematic dynamics in other important relationships, unrealistic expectations placed on us by society's "standards", or the internal struggle to find out who we are and where our place is in the world, our repeated unsuccessful attempts to navigate these stressors can leave us feeling stuck in a cycle of dissatisfaction and disappointment. In this cycle, we can lose touch with our sense of happiness, balance and peace.

Sometimes something feels "off" but you don't know what it is. You feel sluggish, unmotivated, and overburdened by responsibilities. Maybe your relationships are suffering due to poor communication, or you feel you're not meeting the needs of the multiple roles you play in your life. Having a nonjudgmental space to express your frustrations and address these challenges is invaluable and proven to be effective.

Many people seem to have lost their way; they have followed paths they believe they "should" take and find themselves asking why they are not as happy as they expected to be. At the heart of therapy is empathy, i.e. the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. My empathy for clients enables them to identify their feelings and needs, and accept and value them. This allows them to empathize with others and form meaningful relationships. While therapy requires work and commitment and can thus be challenging, it is well worth the investment of time and energy.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
