Struggling with substance use disorders can often be lonely, isolating and confusing. There is a lot of help offered out there, but so often what's being offered can be confusing and conflicting. Is addiction a behavior? A spiritual malady? A disease? Or is it something more? My own path of recovery took me many attempts and eventually led me to school to seek the science behind substance use disorders, to recovery rooms, to many therapists for personal recovery, and to lots of different religious avenues in search of meaning and understanding. What I found has illuminated my own path and practice. I love to pass these insights on.

With extensive history working with people with mood disorders such as anxiety and depression, as well as substance use, I’ve primarily used a humanistic/person-centered approach along with cognitive behavioral therapy to bring out the best in others.
Life can be overwhelming. Does a feeling of sadness, hopelessness, or panic sneak into your day or even your week sometimes? Do you need help to kick that habit you’ve been wanting to change? It can be tough to cope with things when they are too much to bear and self-sufficient skills that used to be helpful, aren’t doing what they used to. Sometimes our relationships become complicated and begin to be difficult to navigate and we need assistance doing so. If you have thought or felt any of these things, and it sounds like what you are going through, reach out at your earliest convenience to see if therapy with me is right for you.

I have worked in several clinics and I currently work full time as a Substance Use Counselor.
Living with anxiety, depression, unregulated emotions can make life seem 10x harder. Things such as work, household chores, or even self care can seem overwhelming and relationships can take up energy. But there is HOPE.

Mental health is the foundation of our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It influences how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others and make decisions. I am here to help.

Disconnection from our true selves may lead to issues communicating with loved ones, career dissatisfaction, decreased sense of self-worth, substance use, or playing a role in this world you never asked for.
Establishing yourself, and your identity, is a lifelong process. You are not alone when you face questions including: Who am I? What is my purpose? Who do I want in my life? What do I stand for? Why am I here? When we consider these questions, along with countless others branching from these, you might find yourself overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, or frustrated. Attempting to navigate this process, you may face societal expectations, dysfunctional family dynamics, economic challenges or other stressors operating against you. While desire to be stable, authentic, and true to self is shared, your story will always be unique.

I have worked with individuals for ten years with mental health, emotional problems, and substance use disorders.
Accepting new clients! Available Weekdays (9AM - 4PM); evenings full. Are you struggling with anxiety, depression, burn out, stress, or loneliness? Unfortunately, this is quite common for many people in today's world. Some feel as if they are drifting through life, without a deeper sense of meaning, or purpose. Sometimes, we numb the pain; other times, we just accept it and don't realize how to manage it. It is also common for people to struggle with having deeper relationships, whether with family, friends or romantic. If you would like to identify and explore the roots of these, or other issues, you have come to the right place.

I have worked with child & adult survivors of domestic and sexual violence at an advocacy agency, with families and adolescents diagnosed with substance use disorders in a residential treatment facility, and adults online/in person at an integrated healthcare setting.
I'm here to support clients who are looking to strengthen their mental health, relationships, and adaptability. Every day we face challenges and stress; whether it is neurobiologically based, interpersonal, a trauma response, or the result of systemic stressors of an unjust society. While I use a variety of approaches and techniques based on client needs, my foundation is person centered. You deserve a safe, nonjudgmental space to break down or build back up. I believe my clients have all the answers within them and are capable of great things. My role is to use my education, training, and empathy to help you reach your goals.

Thank you for taking time to read by profile. For the last 13 years I have worked in an outpatient mental health setting meeting with adults dealing with a wide range of mental health symptoms using a variety of interventions. I am a licensed mental health counselor, a nationally certified counselor, and a CASAC (certified alcohol and substance abuse counselor). I know there are times when everyday life can be challenging and overwhelming. Sometimes we need someone to listen and hear what we have to say in a caring, non-judgmental way.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
