I believe in working cooperatively with people to help them achieve balance, personal growth, and to reach their personal goals. Many people feel isolated and their anxiety or depression prevent them from being their best self. We all have the ability to learn, grow and reach our highest potential, and we cannot do it alone. Together we can identify strengths, work through challenges, and develop the skills to achieve a higher level of peace and contentment.

On life’s journey we are constantly growing and developing. Whether young or old, life is a journey that usually entail efforts of trying to understand divine will. We often question our purpose in life, especially during challenging times. To keep it real, in many cultures/communities, such as the African American (Black) community, we might have been taught to either “pray” about our situations, issues, and emotions or “suck it up and keep it moving.” This can create negative energies such as anxiety, depression, anger, guilt, and other mental health issues that need to be addressed in a healthy manner.

I'm a therapist+musician who loves working with people on their journeys to healthier relationships and becoming their authentic selves. I was raised fundamentalist and spent my childhood learning fire and brimstone theology and memorizing verses from the King James Bible. Needless to say I chose to leave the "sinners in the hands of an angry God" mentality behind when I grew up. The truth is, being hard on ourselves doesn't help us or anyone else. But compassion, love, acceptance and presence connect us to who we really are, and who we can become.

Therapy is a unique experience and I believe that we as humans are most balanced when we feel safe and understood, non-judgmentally. As a bilingual therapist (English and Spanish), I strive to ensure that clients are provided the space to effectively express themselves in a way that makes sense to them. I have experience working with children, teens, families, and couples who can be experiencing challenges with life transitions, anxiety, depression, stress, or simply would like a neutral person to talk to.

Have you ever found yourself in a place where you feel a little lost, uncertain of the way forward? Maybe you are struggling with wounds from the past, fear about your future, or lack of energy, motivation, and/or purpose in the present? These moments can feel frustrating and disorienting, and they can also be springboards that help us move towards creating more meaningful ways of being. As a strong believer that we are both wounded and healed in relationships, I offer a safe space that is free of judgment and honors each person’s unique experience.

I would like to first start with saying Congratulations to making the first step in prioritizing your mental health! It is a courageous decision to work on ourselves! Therapy can be the beginning of a life changing endeavor for many and it all begins with you. HI! My name is Erin and I, too, have made that same decision in my life to seek better understanding of myself as well as working through challenges that have gotten me “stuck” at times in my life. I share this because I feel it important for my patients to know that my own personal journey allows me to be empathetic and compassionate to patient’s needs and struggles.

Using a psychodynamic framework to engage you, build hope, and establish a healing relationship, I specialize in dealing with the cumulative life stresses, traumas, griefs and losses that insidiously sabotage your best efforts, deplete your energy, tempt you into addictions to numb and avoid the pain life has brought you, or turn your long suffering into despair and depression.

I have been in the mental health field for six years with a master’s in mental health counseling and, currently, obtaining my doctorate in counselor education. I have worked with a plethora of symptomatic presentations, but my specialties lie in cutting-edge practices of chronic pain and mind-body disorders, sexual disorders, and trauma/PTSD. Prior experience in domestic violence and sexual assault crisis counseling, along with community advocacy for mental health services. I view health holistically: mind, body, and spirit. You are feeling STUCK, and a block keeps happening that keeps you from moving forward in your life. You have lived so much life, but memories, shame, and those tough feelings come back to remind you more than you care to admit. Life has thrown you huge curveballs, and yet you can’t figure out why you struggle with everyday tasks as simple as making a clarity-filled decision. Not only that, but your body reminds you often of the stress it is under- even when you’ve done every coping skill you can think of. Breathing? Nope. Counting to ten? Forget it. You deserve to dig deeper. You deserve to rip off the band-aids.

Christian Therapists

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

Therapists and clients don’t need to share the same belief system or background to be able to work effectively together, but a therapist whose training includes a focus on cultural competence may be better able to form a therapeutic bond with individuals from a range of backgrounds, as they will have experience in tailoring their approach to each client—and will be prepared to acknowledge and consider the effects of culture, religion, and other factors on each individual.

Why is it important to find a therapist sensitive to Christian values?

Each person brings a unique history and background to therapy, making it important to find a licensed therapist who is trained in a broad range of treatment modalities. In addition, for people who grow up in a faith tradition that strongly influences the way they conduct their everyday life, finding a therapist who understands or shares that background can ease the disclosure of sensitive information and facilitate the therapeutic process. For some clients, a Christian therapist is likely to incorporate faith-based principles into emotional healing techniques.

How do I recognize an effective Christian therapist?

Christian therapists are licensed mental health professionals—holding a master’s or doctoral degree in medicine, nursing, psychology, counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy—who are also familiar with Christian beliefs and values. They have an understanding of the importance that Christian principles play in the lives of individuals and families, which allows them to be especially sensitive to the kinds of struggles that can affect daily functioning. Like all effective therapists, a Christian therapist will have undergone training and certification in a variety of treatment modalities that help people through crises and enable them to master the challenges of life.

Why might someone feel comfortable with a Christian therapist?

While training, qualifications, and experience are always important, research has long established that a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic success. An alliance is likely to be strengthened with a therapist who not only is responsive to questions and concerns but also shares a client’s faith and values. Sensitivity to spiritual matters as well as to everyday struggles can provide a welcome sense of safety and contribute to the bond between client and therapist, both of which support the therapeutic process.

Who is included in Psychology Today’s directory of Christian therapists?

The directory of Christian therapists includes professionals who have shared their background in their profiles. However, not all therapists choose to disclose this information, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. The directory also shows therapists who indicate that they have extensive experience working with Christian clients, regardless of their own background or religious affiliation.
