My approach to therapy is trauma focused and includes EMDR, parts-work, CBT and meditation.
Do you feel a deep pain or ache but can't tell exactly where it comes from? Or maybe you carry the weight of the world and feel like you can't set down the burden? As we go through life, we all experience manifestations of suffering and sometimes even trauma. Trauma makes us feel off-balance. It can affect us at work, in our relationships and even take away our sense of self, leaving us with an ever present sense of heaviness. Anxiety, depression, insomnia, sexual problems and a host of other issues, can all result from unhealed trauma. The good news is that we really can heal, learning to move away from trauma and toward love.

We then work through many of these stressors using a variety of techniques, such as CBT, mindfulness, or even EMDR.
As an Indo-Caribbean-American mental health counselor, I bring a deep understanding and empathy to those grappling with mental health challenges. I know firsthand the cultural stigmas that often accompany these struggles. Growing up in a Guyanese household where emotions weren't openly discussed, I've experienced feelings of being misunderstood or ostracized after being vulnerable. I want you to know that I recognize these unique experiences and identities that shape our mental health perspectives. You can expect a safe, non-judgmental space to explore your thoughts and feelings in our sessions.

If the feelings are too overwhelming, we may talk about doing something called EMDR, which is a trauma-focused intervention and protocol to help you gain your equilibrium in a more concrete manner.
Healing comes in many guises. We can heal from a cut hand with a band aid, we can heal from a broken bone by setting it and isolating it in a cast, but when we heal from hurting feelings and trauma, we're not as savvy on how to heal this. Sometimes, when we're traumatized, we don't know what to do to feel better.

EMDR Therapists

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
