In the 20 years that I've practiced psychotherapy I've come to appreciate the uniqueness and complexities that make us who we are. When problems arise and it is decided to enter therapy, it becomes something of a "Magical Mystery Tour" into our inner world, hopefully to learn more about ourselves.

There are no parent manuals. Sometimes our children present us with challenges that we are not equipped to handle. But, an objective and collaborative well-trained clinician can address these challenges that can ultimately make parenting more enjoyable. With over 30 years of experience working in schools as a teacher, special educator and clinical psychologist, I see myself as a partner in parenting. I enable parents to adopt a mindset that aligns with their child’s temperament and I offer insight into their child’s developmental needs.

Life can feel hard at times. Some people describe feeling lonely, stuck, and misunderstood. Maybe you have gone through a recent change in your life, work or relationship. Life transitions, even happy ones, are known to cause anxiety at times. Sometimes we all need some support. Over the past several years my practice has focused, among other areas, on: relationship issues, parenting, divorce, illness, and career transitions. I also work with couples to help them find what is needed to make their relationship better or find ways to part amicably, if that is what is best for them.

Do you find yourself feeling stuck in certain feelings? We call emotions "feelings" because they are experienced physically first, and then words are put to what is felt. If talking yourself out of uncomfortable feelings isn't working, you may want to try body-based therapy. All of your emotions are needed to fully express yourself, just as a dancer needs a full range of motion, and an artist needs every color. I help clients to cope with uncomfortable and painful feelings in order to open up to feeling safe experiencing the full range of human emotions. I offer traditional talk therapy, body-based therapy, and Walk & Talk therapy.

"What can children do when they feel worried?" Children experience fears and worries that make their lives more challenging. It can be overwhelming and frustrating for parents to see their child struggling with anxiety, but they do not have to handle their fears and worries alone. Many children can overcome their anxiety by learning ways to manage and cope with these feelings. I teach children ways to think and behave differently to help decrease their anxiety.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
