Sometimes life can feel like a struggle and it can be difficult coping with day-to-day tasks. Stress builds up and maybe you find it hard to say "no" even when you are overwhelmed. Asking for help is the first step in getting to a better place - a place where you can reconnect with and identify your values and take steps toward honoring what's important to you. I believe therapy is not “one size fits all,” but rather a journey to find what works for each person. Together we can explore what will work for you and have some fun along the way. Book with me now by clicking on my website.

Beginning therapy, whether you are going for the first time, or are restarting a process can feel difficult and even lonely. There is a never a "bad" time to take that first step, and finding the right therapist can help you make that long lasting change that you deserve. By building a relationship centered on safety, authenticity, and collaboration, I help to foster an environment where you can begin to explore, heal, and grow. My approach to psychotherapy is focused on finding a treatment that is tailored to your needs - not "one-size-fits-all."

I provide Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT) to enhance your life satisfaction, sense of mastery, and connectedness with others, utilizing a warm, evidence-based, humane, collaborative manner. Therapy is not something I do TO you, but instead, a "journey" that we take together in partnership (and sometimes in laughter). We will go at your pace and focus on YOUR goals for you. I will attempt to build on your strengths and the coping skills you already possess, and to educate you about communication, problem-solving, and stress-management tools that are new to you. I have been in practice for 30 years.

We aren't born knowing how to be caregivers, nor can we ever fully anticipate the challenges of the role. Many of us don’t even recognize that we are caregivers - we see ourselves simply as daughters, sons, spouses, or family members doing what needs to be done. We might feel joy in caring for a loved one or resentment for looking after someone who never cared for us. Regardless, we may feel like we are not doing enough to take care of our family member and often worry that no matter what we do, it will never be enough.

Motivational Interviewing Therapists

How does motivational interviewing work?

Motivational interviewing aims to uncover a person’s internal motivation to change their life. Toward this end, the therapist listens, empathizes, and collaborates with the client based on their perspective; the therapist doesn’t adhere to a predetermined plan for change or impose their viewpoint on the client. Discovering an individual’s most important reasons for change, and guiding them to achieve those changes, can empower people to shift from ambivalence to action.

Is motivational interviewing evidence-based?

Yes, research shows that motivational interviewing can help treat alcohol and substance use — and in different ways such as reducing drinking, reducing resistance, and increasing the likelihood of staying in treatment. Motivational interviewing has also been shown to help people lose weight, adhere to medication regimens, improve diet for those with Type II diabetes, and improve healthy behaviors in children.

How long does motivational interviewing last?

Motivational interviewing is a short-term therapy that can last just one or two sessions. In some cases, motivational interviewing may be used in conjunction with longer-term therapies, but for most people, motivational interviewing is a brief intervention that aims to help patients understand their personal, specific, and internal reasons for changing their life.

What differentiates motivational interviewing from person-centered therapy?

In person-centered therapy, the individual is in the driver’s seat of the treatment process, creating space for them to trust their instincts and arrive at their own solutions. The two approaches are similar because motivational interviewing is also client-centered; however, person-centered therapy is more open-ended while motivational interviewing is somewhat more structured; the goal is to change, and the therapist helps the client specifically discover their internal motivations to modify their behavior.
