For 27 years, I have specialized in providing Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) with particular interests in treating trauma, substance abuse, autism spectrum disorder, and chronic suicidality which has enhanced my ability to work with people presenting with more common issues of depression, anxiety and interpersonal difficulties.
In my work as a clinical psychologist, I believe the connection between therapist and client to be the most important agent of change. Healing happens best in the context of a warm, collaborative and supportive relationship. When an individual is going through a difficult time or life experience, he or she often feels small, disconnected and incapable of making positive changes on his or her own. In safe connection, it becomes possible for the individual to feel empowered, connected and more flexible and capable of making the decisions and behavioral changes necessary to heal and/or move forward.

I have much experience working with an array of anxiety disorders, including panic attacks, and have extensive training in treatment of PTSD, exploring the continued impact on relationships.
I applaud the courage of individuals who recognize the need to seek help for any emotional or life stage crisis. One of the biggest hurdles in achieving an improved sense of self and well-being,then,may already be behind you! I especially welcome families, couples and individuals struggling with the human life cycle crises - the birth of a child, job or residences changes, divorce, college, elderly parents, health problems, grief and loss. Managing situational or ongoing anxiety and depression also sometimes accompany these life cycle shifts, often challenging the very best of us.

Certain topics such as childhood trauma are very delicate, so I remind you that therapy is a judgement-free zone.
Sometimes, there is a concrete event or change we can point to as the cause for increased anxiety, depressed mood or relationship conflicts and we just need some support as we transition and adjust to these changes. However, some people may experience a chronic sense of disconnection, low self-worth, persistent sadness or confusing stress responses that impact various areas of their life. Therapy can provide support, resources & tools in order to work through current struggles, resolve past injuries or address underlying and persistent issues that prevent us from living a fulfilling life.

Maybe you feel like your past is weighing you down and you can't move forward because of unresolved problems. Regardless, I welcome you to take one step by giving me a call today. Together we will figure out the rest of the journey at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
